The original is very good. I kind of bought it on a whim and figured it would be more or less okay and I was very pleasantly surprised.

I've only seen the remake once and didn't particularly care for it. It wasn't really bad exactly but it struck me as kind of cold and emotionless. I definitely plan on giving it another look at some point but if I could only keep one I would keep the original.

Personally, I prefer the remake, though I do like the original as well.

On the other hand, of the two Delmer Daves/Glenn Ford westerns that Criterion released, I prefer Jubal to 3:10 to Yuma.

I would have to go with the original, although the remake is a fun flick. I prefer the simplicity of the original, and the final half packs more of a punch with the hotel room conversations.

The original looks perfect on the Criterion Blu-ray, and it's another stellar example of how good the old black-and-white westerns can come across in high definition.

Definitely the remake. The darker tone and mood of the film, for example, makes it a lot more believable and engaging.

How long does standard B&N shipping normally take? Haven't ordered from them in years.

Another home run for the Roberto Rossellini/Ingrid Bergman team!

As much as I enjoyed Stromboli, I like Europe '51 even more.

The English version of Europe '51 has the best-looking transfer, but I am glad that I decided to watch the longer Italian version first, because some of the scenes that were later cut for the International versions are fascinating in their own right from a historical perspective. I have always loved how the Criterion Collection films can teach me about many facets of world history in a way that is only dryly presented in textbooks, and this film is a standout example. This story really gives one an idea of how, during the divisive early years of the Cold War, people whose ideologies fell between Communism and organized Christian conventions had trouble finding a place in society.

Ingrid Bergman really pulls her weight in this film that showcases the best of all of her acting strengths from other movies that I've seen in her canon. Her character transition is touching and ultimately quite radiant.

I hope that everyone else has a chance to see this one.

Later tonight, I'll complete my Rossellini/Bergman field trip with Journey to Italy.

Figure about a week, maybe. They'll send you a 'scheduled to ship' mail like twenty minutes after you place the order and a shipping mail within a day or so but that just means they've generated the USPS label. You won't see any traking info for a couple days and then it's normal mail times.

Fanny and Alexander is so rich that I think you will really like it. After watching it the first time I told my wife it was like watching a Dickens novel. Only later did I realize that Dickens was on Bergman's mind when he made it.

That's a great description of Fanny and Alexander in a nutshell. I really do get swept up into the film in the same way that I get swept into the complex story arcs of the Dickens novels.

It slightly enrages me that when people are gushing over Fanny and Alexander, no one talks about the scene where
[Show spoiler]the kids escape the evil stepfather and he runs upstairs and sees them upstairs while they already escaped. I believe when questioned on that scene, Bergman basically gave no explanation. If something like that was to happen in any film these days, the film would be crucified on the Internet where as F&A is so highly regarded. It just boggles my mind. It is like people do not even want to mention that scene.

In a perfect world, Criterion would get its hands on all the Hitchcock films whose transfers Universal (the worst studio for home video) botched and give them the proper treatment they deserve.

So like everyone else probably, I got more than I planned walking through the doors.. I originally was just going to pick up Seconds, but ended up getting that and also Earrings of Madame de.. and Bicycle Thieves. I just could not wait of Thieves anymore, I'm very impatient. Next week is City Lights.

[Show spoiler]I just accept as a given that supernatural events can occur in the world that Bergman created for Fanny and Alexander. Uncle Isak apparently uses magic to make the children's images appear upstairs, and the stepfather is told not to touch the children, apparently because to do so would be to reveal the illusion.

This scene really threw me for a loop the first time that I saw the film, but I still love it. The children are existing in a mystical world of wonders that we view, in turn, as though we are seeing the world through the eyes of a child.

If I had to compare this to a more recent film on these shores, I would compare it to the inexplicable scene in Pulp Fiction where bulletholes are found in the wall directly behind Jules and Vincent, yet they are unhurt.

They will stick with the plastic cases for most releases, packaging wise its business as usual.

On Tuesday I think I'm going to kick this sale off with Frances Ha and possibly Hunger (in a huge McQueen kick right now).

I still have 3 from the last sale I haven't watched yet, I like to savor them I guess.

The only Blu-ray transfer in the Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection box set that I have any real complaints about is Family Plot. Everything else in that set looks just fine to me. The Man Who Knew Too Much has some color issues during a scene or two, but it does not detract from my enjoyment of the presentation in the slightest, and much of it seems to be source-related.
Even Family Plot is watchable enough, though, once the absymal VHS tape quality of the first scene passes.

I think that the site reviews are too critical for The Birds and Marnie. I cannot say anything negative about those presentations.

Overall, I am thrilled with the Hitchcock presentations.

Now, I would not mind at all if Criterion picked these up and turned the Mercedes Benzes into Aston Martins. I would gladly double dip on every single title.

I own Bicycle Thieves and I honestly can't even remember it being picture boxed so I'll say, no. Citizen Kane is picture boxed too and that's still as great as advertised.

A couple of questions: This is my collection of CC and I'am planning on picking up one from BN. Which should I add next?

Bicycle Thieves
The Uninvited
The Wages of Fear
Seven Samarai
Rashomon
On The Waterfront
The Killing
The Seventh Seal
Paths of Glory
A night to Remember
8 1/2
The Think Red Line
The Darjeeling Limited
Rushmore
Two-Lane Blacktop
M
The Battle of Algiers
Curious case of Benjamin Button

Also, what are the chances a film like Goodfellas or Napoleon Dynamite getting the CC treatment?
You cannot go wrong with The Game.
