Yeah, no film has ever affected me like that. After it was over I said "cinema can do that?!?!?!" Oh, the cinematography is amazing as well; the mixture of desert and neon makes for one beautiful picture.

Is it really uncut on Netflix? I actually watched it at the cinema around 12-15 years ago through my local filmclub and specially the scene with the boiled egg made people in the audience react. And I totally agree that the movie is just... meh.

That's like saying Leaving Las Vegas didn't have a plot or character development. I mean, it's largely true but it doesn't make the film any less powerful.

I'm not exactly going to rave about ITROTS but it didn't just titilate or push boundaries - there was quite a bit of substance.

There's the 1933 original plus remakes from 1976 and 2005. Interestingly, while the original is lauded for its groundbreaking stop motion effects, there was no Oscar at the time for effects work, however, both remakes won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects (even though the effects in the '76 version are pretty shoddy, only two films were eligible that year so the Academy just awarded them both with Oscars).

Son of Kong is the sequel to the original '33 version.

King Kong Lives from 1986 is the direct sequel to the '76 version of Kong.

Toho Studios also licenced the character and included him in two films, King Kong Vs Godzilla and King Kong Escapes.

There may be more, but I can't think of them right now. Universal had planned on making a Kong remake in the mid-70s in Sensurround (The Legend of King Kong), but when Dino De Laurentiis made his version, the Universal version was scrapped.

I would love to see Fantastic Mr. Fox and Persona. Here are some that I would be most excited for an upgrade:

Bicycle Thieves
Carnival of Souls
Armageddon (say what you will, it's junk-food cinema at it's most bombastic and cheesy. IMO it's a blast!)

I don't think so, no. They said it's been restored and will be coming to BD next year but I don't believe they specifically said they would be releasing it directly.

I agree with Armageddon but I'd rather have the Rock instead. Say what you will about these over the top action flicks, there's no denying they have a history in film.

Yeah, Armageddon definitely isn't an all-time classic but it's sentimental, silly, cheesy and epic. It's the perfect Friday night film!

Your picks of Children of Men and Rocky are sweet! If Children of Men gets on the Criterion Collection, I would freak out!

Grover Crisp, the executive vice-president of film restoration at Sony, the rerelease is the result of more than two decades of work. The camera negative for The Lady from Shanghai was in such a poor state that it was only thanks to recent developments in digital technology that they could successfully restore it.

"Although we do have the original camera negative for the film, it has just about everything wrong with it," said Crisp. "Doing the work digitally means we have not had to compromise by using the substandard secondary film elements. We will be showing the restoration from a 4K digital cinema package, though we are planning to record out to a new negative for preservation purposes and a few prints. The film will also finally be released on Blu-ray shortly."

I don't see anything about Sony releasing it directly. That's obviously a possibility but a release by one of their licensing partners seems just as plausible (if not more so given their reluctance to directly release, well, anything).
