Serpico was on TV a week or so ago and it was quite a reminder of just how good Pacino was.
In case anyone missed it, not real, it's from "Jack and Jill" (the Adam Sandler movie), but fits in the 'missing pieces of integrity' category.

I have to admit though, first time I saw this I laughed so hard I almost pissed myself. It still has comedic value, but losses lots on replays. Easily the best part of the film IMO.

I'd actually say it started in 1983 with Scarface, but I don't think it's a bad thing. That's just the moment where he went from being a more methody actor, to just much more theatrical and broad. All the broad stuff is just what we consider Pacino.

I think it's hard for any actor to truly disappear into a role after you've seen them in enough stuff. I'll admit I like stuff like The Devil's Advocate because of Pacino being Pacino. I guess what brings a smile to my face probably makes other people cringe.

Pacino gave some terrific performances in Donnie Brasco and The Insider that weren't Pacino just being Pacino...they are just two off the top of my had, I am sure their are more.

Glengarry Glen Ross definitely belongs on that list too.

It's hard to believe that was the same year as Scent of a Woman. Talk about both ends of the Pacino Spectrum.

(and it's even harder to believe that was over twenty years ago already)

Yes, I would say it probably begins with Scarface as well. My assessment of Pacino in that is that it's the greatest comedic performance ever in a non-comedy film! I mean it's an enjoyable movie and all but with his wig, darkened skin and accent it just comes across as camp of the highest order. Plus so many outlandish moments and lines (say hello to my little friend, polluted womb, etc.)

I've also always been fascinated by his change of voice. In the 70s he had such a soft voice with a bit of a rhotacism, then in the late 80s it was pure leathery gruffness with all those hoo-haas.

The annoucement of a 'Masters of Cinema' release has just resulted in me not picking this Paramount disc up. I was hoping for a Criterion/StudioCanal Collection level release...

What's your name? "F**k you"! That's my name.

Love Alec Baldwin in that film.

They are the U.K's answer to Criterion in my opinion. Absolute amazing blu-ray's.

Yes they definitely are the Criterion of the UK and have produced a number of great blu-rays but with that said I don't know if they will produce a Blu of Serpico that will completely outshine the US Warner edition in terms of PQ. I am sure they will have several of additional extras but as far as the actual feature...well you know they will be using the same HD master and may be able to tweak something here or there for minor improvements(if even needed) but for the most part I would assume the presentations will look pretty similar. This is of course all relying on the fact the Warner doesn't DNR the crap out of their edition but Warner is usually pretty good about keeping their hands off the DNR button. Also I am not sure who produced this master in question, it actually was probably Paramount and Warner is just distributing it in the states. Paramount is usually pretty solid too though. The main thing here is I think we will just have to wait and see how the reviews go regarding the US edition.

Do they typically produce their own extras? Region-free?

Eureka is getting the master from Paramount, just like Warner is, so the two should be very similar. The two releases share most of the same extras too.

The main differences in extras is the Warner release has a stills gallery with a Lumet commentary, and the MoC release has a 36 page booklet.

WB:
Serpico: Reel to Real (9:58)
Inside Serpico (12:55)
Serpico: Favorite Moments (2:39)
Stills Gallery with Sidney Lumet Commentary (4:24)
Trailer (4:16)

Eureka/MoC
:
Serpico: Reel to Real (9:58)
Inside Serpico (12:55)
Serpico: Favorite Moments (2:39)
Trailer (4:16)
36-PAGE FULL-COLOUR BOOKLET featuring a new and exclusive essay by critic and author of Al Pacino: Anatomy of an Actor, Karina Longworth; rare archival imagery, and more!

I only wish this was true. Look at what each of the two did from what is obviously the same master:
