I didn't say that...

Here's the main issues that people have with the film.
  • The minimal action compared to the large amount of dialogue.
  • The concept being "stupid" and "pointless".
  • A generally mediocre actress like Cameron Diaz playing in a serious role among some of the current big names like Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt.
The thing about Ridley Scott films is that the majority expects them to have a perfect balance of simplicity and high entertainment value. People see a name like "Brad Pitt" and assume it to be just another blockbuster. What these individuals need to understand, however, is that this is a very complex and difficult film.

A lot of the movie goers, especially nowadays, want the themes and concepts to be spelled out easily in black and white for them. They do not want to expend any sort of mental energy in order to understand the big picture. Therefore, by somebody calling this movie "stupid" and "pointless" is nothing short of a cop out.

While I'm not saying that any of these issues apply to why you hated it, I'm just simply expressing what seems to be the mainstream critiques of this film. There are numerous factors for what each person enjoys in a film, I understand that as I have my own. However, some of the thoughtless critiques on this one are just absurd and require attention.
