What are the studios going to do when DVD is finally dead, which is pretty darned soon now? They'll have to go to Bluray. Plus, Bluray is getting more affordable every day. The days of DVD are numbered, just like VHS was. The trouble with the studios is they are always wrong on the oldies.

DVD players couldn't play VHS tapes (ok, yeah there were a few combo players actually)... so you had to make a choice. Blu-ray players play DVDs... so there is no forseeable "end" to DVD in sight. There are lots of things that are not available in HD (things on videotape in SD) and it makes no sense to put them on Blu-ray really... it's a medium, and the DVD media works just fine for a lot of content still. |

I own all 11 seasons of NCIS on DVD and haven't noticed anything visually troublesome myself. I'd also purchase all 11 seasons on Blu-ray, even if it wasn't until after the show had aired its final season, the complete series being offered on Blu-ray at that point. One can always dream. :-P Short of that my HD dollars will be going elsewhere. Will not invest (...think I threw up in my mouth a little bit) in any online HD offerings for this or any other TV show. Put those 1's and 0's on a Blu-ray disc or no sale.

I have a Samsung LED 65" Smart TV that I bought at Costco with the Samsung BR player and soundbar last February . . . which I have at the foot of our bed. We have over 4000 DVDs since we started in the 1990's, and I have been very, very slow in getting "keepers" on BR. I think we have around 20 so far, and they are all superior to their DVD counterparts in some fashion. That said, we also have the Honeymooners 39 Episodes on DVD, and I have figured out how to adjust the Samsung TV in such as manner (takes a bachelor of science degree to some extent) so that the DVD's look rather well on the 65" screen. Now the Honeymooner set is out on BR. So I guess my question to you is . . . how does NCIS look on your screen (I assume you have a high definition TV) ?? From our DVD collection in Television series, many do not look well at all, while some do okay, such as first season of Maverick . . . but that I have to manually size down the screen for more clarity. |

In my primary viewing room I have two displays, a Samsung PN58B860 58" Plasma Display (1080p) and a BenQ W1080ST Front Projector (1080p) which I have paired with a 120" inch screen. That being said, I do own 2,226 DVD's and find the picture quality to be quite acceptable in most cases when viewed on my 58" plasma display (...from about 12' away) for what I'd consider casual viewing. At that screen size the resolution still holds up nicely though there isn't that wow factor (...which I find completely addicting) you'll get with the same title on Blu-ray and for me the increased resolution offered on Blu-ray really does make a significant difference (...not to mention the upgrade in audio from lossy to lossless), enough so that if I really value the given title I'll upgrade from the DVD to the Blu-ray, especially in cases where the DVD offered a poor video transfer to begin with or perhaps was never released in anamorphic widescreen. Now viewing per my front projector is a completely different story. I don't even bother watching DVD's on my front projector. At 120" the resolution just doesn't hold up. DVD's look like garbage in comparison to the same title on Blu-ray at 120" and that even includes Blu-ray titles which are considered to offer an average video transfer at best. That extra resolution counts big time and since I rarely watch anything on my plasma display anymore since purchasing my front projector I've been more inclined to upgrade pretty much anything that I own on DVD to Blu-ray that I anticipate I'd like to watch again in the future.

Thanks so much.
So back on-topic here, NCIS is a favorite that we never bought in DVD. And as you described as the "wow factor" is what I tend towards. But my wife could take it or leave it. She is hoping I can get it in some format. She like watching DVDs in her sewing room, which has the Walmart 32" Tube TV we bought many, many years ago when our last big-box set ended in the junk yard. A 32" tube TV is fine for her for DVDs, and she is buying old TV series every month . . . of series that I mostly do not watch. But NCIS I would watch on BR back-to-back (binge viewing). Otherwise, CBS will open a new streaming channel this year in high definition - which could be a decent alternative to DVD. |
