Does it bother no one else that when you put the slipcover in your collection the front cover has to face backwards so that the slip spine reads correctly?

Otherwise - great release
Although, Desolation of Smaug looks like its gonna blow AUJ away

Happy Thanksgiving all
I'm a little bothered by that, too. But I just figure, the only part I see when it's on my shelf is the spine, so I don't care too much.

For those who own the 3D extended...are there any issues watching this in 2D and is it of the same quality as the regular 2D extended version?

The regular extended 3D 5-disc set has the same 2D discs that come with the 2D set.

The 3D steel book set at Best Buy only included the 3D discs. I don't know if you can play that set in 2D. It's usually better to have separate 2D and 3D encodes since 3D encodes are usually boosted to compensate for brightness loss through the glasses.

Finally got around to watching this last night. I enjoyed all of the extra footage except for The Goblin Kings song. That was cringe inducing, like on a George Lucas level of bad

I purchased the 3D Steelbook from BestBuy and considered watching it 3D->2D, but ended up purchasing the regular 2D version on eBay.
Having to watch the 3D disc in 2D isn't the same as the 2D version, due to the settings on my display.

With those new editions out, I am more than surprised that the regular edition was not discounted as a Black Friday item!
Nothing screams Black Friday more, especially with the sequel coming out!

Don't believe the above is accurate but IMO, it is a common assumption.. My experience with the encodes on BD 3D discs exhibit no boosting in brightness. Images have always been the same as the 2D version of a movie when the left and right images are viewed separately through a head mounted display. This would also make sense for the discs to be compatible for new 4K glasses-free 3D displays.
The TV display itself is programmed to boost brightness for 3D media and is calibrated for the specific 3D glasses that were designed to be used as its compatible accessory.

This is correct. If the 3D and 2D is put onto a single disc then the 2D version is going to be over brightened as it us usually the left eye of the 3D image. Some examples include: Dredd, Coraline, and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.

Good to know, thanks. I was strongly considering the Best Buy 3D extended steelbook, but will now probably pass as I want the 2D capability.

To clarify it is not the 3D encode on the disc that over brightens but will activate a glasses-dependent 3D display that brightens 3D media. The 3D codec on the BD 3D disc is not boosted for brightness. It will be equal to the 2D codec when played through direct view HMDs and glasses-free displays in the future.

I assume the bitrates are different between the 3D extended and 2D extended discs as the 3D is over two discs.

It depends on the title. The 3D Underworld: Awakening that is a single 3D/2D disc has a different brightness level in 2D compared to the standard 2D only disc.

Have the Blu-ray 3D of Kate Beckinsale Underworld: Awakening in my collection and it contains 3D & 2D choices. When you choose "Play In 3D" a glasses-dependent 3D display will boost the brightness of the 3D encode. When "Play in 2D" is chosen a glasses-dependent 3D display will not boost the brightness of the codec. Playing the 2D or 3D version on an HMD will not boost brightness for either version. The 3D codec will only activate a boost in brightness on a glasses-dependent 3D display.

So, if I disengage the 3D option on my Oppo 103D, the 3D extended version should play as normal (look the same) as the regular 2D extended disc?

There has to be a "Play in 2D choice" on a Blu-ray 3D for a glasses-dependent display to not activate a brightness boost. Without the choice on the disc only a glassless direct-view HMD or future glasses-free display will look the same as regular 2D extended discs.

Best bet? If you live in California or have free LD, be safe & call Oppo:
