Default Recommend some non-perverted anime

Most of what I've seen - which promptly caused me to lose interest - is basically soft-core porn. From what I understand, this constitutes the majority of the genre. I'm no prude by any means but cartoon boobs and butts just don't do it for me.

Also, please no Studio Ghibli suggestions. Thanks.

Anime is not a genre...it is a medium to tell a story just like regular film/movies. T&A does not constitute the majority of anime...but it is a noticeable percentage.

Here are a few great titles without the T&A, which cover a very wide range of genres (Video trailers included for each under the spoiler tags):

5 centimeters per second

Attack on Titan

Beck

Capeta
Season 1

Season 2

Casshern Sins

Dai-Guard

Ergo Proxy

Flag
[Show spoiler]

Gunslinger Girl

Jin-Roh

Millennium Actress

Moribito

Patlabor
(OVA first then Movie 1 to get started....)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica
No trailer does this justice....because it would require spoiling the surprises of this masterpiece...lets just says it's not really the show it first appears to be on the surface when start watching it...

Ramen Fighter Miki

Spriggan

Summer Wars

Sword of the Stranger

Trigun

Usagi Drop

Yukikaze

Not every anime is an ecchi or hentai, at most you'll have one close up of a private part per episode in most shows. Let me guess... someone recommended you Ikki Tousen, Queen's Blade, Highschool DxD, Highschool Of The Dead or most harem shows. Avoid those and stick to most animes out there.

Fate/Zero
.hack//SIGN
Steins.Gate
Akira
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Aku No Hana
Elfen Lied (There is nudity, extremely graphic violence and incest references, but trust me, it's amazing)
Hellsing Ultimate
Eden Of The East
Anything made by Studio Ghibli
Anything made by Satoshi Kon
Higurashi: No Naku Koro Ni and it's sequel No Naku Koro Ni Kai
Serial Experiments Lain
Vampire Hunter D and it's sequel Bloodlust
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Black Lagoon
Redline
Ghost In The Shell series
Samurai Champloo

I have to disagree with this. The idea that soft-core (or hard-core) hentai is the majority of anime is just one of those myths perpetuated by uninformed people. Likely they know someone who is into those specific shows and thinks that's all there is to it. To them, anime is a small number of easy-to-pigeonhole types:
  • Shounen kid fighting shows like Naruto/Bleach/Dragonball.
  • Cutesy animal characters (Hello Kitty, etc).
  • Magical Girl shows
  • Hentai
Occasionally they're nice enough to acknowledge relatively mainstream anime movies like Akira and Ghost in the Shell, or remember the juggernaut that is Gundam.

But many times they are unaware of the drama, romantic comedy, or suspense genre titles that make up some of the best of anime I feel.

There is large enough in scope in anime that one thing I've noticed is I can go to an anime convention and talk to someone who has similar tastes to me, but at the same time find we don't have as much commonly watched shows as we'd expect. There's simply been so many shows over so many years that it can be easy to follow one recommendation path over another and then not cross that often.

From my perspective, Hentai is a much smaller section of anime, but I don't go actively looking for it really. Also, your judgement will vary. Lots of "fanservice" titles might be considered by you to be soft core, where I might apply a more direct comparison to live-action porn content before thinking that. Different cultures judge it differently, too. In Western countries, anime tends to be rated on a tougher scale simply because it is animated and more affiliated with children's cartoons.

I know this is supposed to be a troll response but I still take exception to including MGX in the list. Ueshiba is a mangaka that has said he's bothered by the oversexualization he sees in some modern Japanese media and is trying to make MGX a more wholesome romantic story.

Throw in School Days, Kite, Another Lady Innocent and Junjou Romantica and that infamous yaoi title that starts with B and ends with O and he should have a blast.

I admit I was wrong to say that the "majority" of anime is soft-core porn or whatever when I've probably just been exposed to the wrong things. I've never been into anime all that much because I didn't like some of the visual style and/or it seemed boring. I won't psycho-analyze why there seems to be so much fan-service/harem stuff out there but maybe there is a very devoted audience?

SeaFox, I especially appreciate your in-depth response. Those categories you listed have in the past appeared to be what comprises the anime medium but lately I've come to notice there's plenty more out there.

For example, last night I watched Redline. Not only did it have beautiful hand-drawn animation (taking 7 years, 100,000 frames, etc.), which I find very impressive, but it was a really fun racing movie. Since I am a fan of Speed Racer (the film), I was probably predisposed to liking it anyway. Yes the main female character was topless in one scene but it wasn't done in a way that invited the audience to ogle and objectify her. The director (I think) in one of the promotional featurettes said that a lot of people can draw graphically but he was looking for a more sensual approach, instead of just flashing huge bouncing tits at the screen.

It's strange that I'm trying to filter my anime experience in this way because I think movies in general should have less violence and more nudity/sexuality but that's an entire different topic.

Nice try but I've watched some of those titles (bits and pieces anyway) and they're exactly what I'm talking about.

If you're referring to the "infamous yaoi title" that I think you are, I've seen it and felt like I ought to turn myself over to the police. I understand that's at the extreme end of the hentai spectrum intended to cater to pedophiles but I'm not surprised it exists, considering you could never do anything like that in live action. Ugh.

Question

I am definitely uninformed when it comes to Anime, so please help me out.

Exactly what is Anime? The only one that I'm aware of is Hellsing that I own!

& I was looking at this title & it did interest me. Is this somewhat sci-fi?

Vracer, you should spoiler tag that post as the videos will take too long to load for people without a solid internet connection.

For recommendations, you can peruse ANN's lists of the best rated, most popular and genre recommendations. If you're only interested in blu-ray, you can then cross-check with blu-ray.com's list of anime blu-rays.

It would help if you informed us of what kinds of live action films and TV you enjoy, then we could more easily tailor recommendations for you.

Anime is animation from Japan. It's really not anymore complicated than that, but here's ANN lexicon entry if you'd like some more details. Though there are trends that make up the majority style of a given time period, there are no rules about what the art style has to look like, and indeed, anime art style can vary wildly.

Robotech is a unique creation of the old days:
Quote:
Made in America from three unrelated anime (Macross, Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada). The first part tells of humanity's first contact that ends in a war. Rick Hunter is a pilot who gets dragged along with the SDF-1 and joins with them to stop the invaders. Lyn Minmei is a singer who Rick rescues and falls for. Together they try to save the Earth and end the war without fighting, but with love.
I watched it as a teenager, but don't really remember it very well. I assume it would be better to watch the original series since you have no nostalgia for the adaptation, but perhaps its westernization is something you would prefer.

For Ghost In The Shell check out Ghost In The Shell 2.0 and it's sequel Innocence. They're both avaiable on Blu-Ray.

As for the show, Stand Alone Complex... there are DVD sets of the show's 2 seasons and Blu-Rays for a few of the OVA's (Solid State Society also has a chinese Blu-Ray with english subtitles that includes the 3D version which looks ****ING AMAZING ) but most of them are OOP and the show's 2 seasons are only avaiable in Blu in Japan and unless you have 500-600 extra dollars I suggest trying to find the show in non-very legal but cheap ways. It sucks but until someone licenses the show in the US or UK we are SOL.

As for Evangelion, watch the series until episodes 24-26. That's when the budget died and unless you want a psychological mecha drama to end with folding chairs and congratulations then don't watch them and skip right into The End Of Evangelion (This film is utterly disturbing and horrifyingly weird so consider yourself warned). Then watch the rebuilds which are still on sale on Amazon and they're... better than the actual show? I love them both but I'd still say the movies are far more accessible.

Ok, I just mentioned it as a joke since it's funny but I think most Otakus know about that thing and they constantly use it as a relatively funny trolling device. I salute you for actually having sat through the actual thing and I hope you got therapy after the horror .

By the way... Kite is actually pretty good. It's ultra violent revenge and even Quentin Tarantino asked an actress from Kill Bill to watch it, mostly because it's pretty damn good. However... it also has hentai (And rape, to an underage woman). Most visual novels have the exact same problem, the ultra explicit sex scenes don't match with the story and sadly Kite suffers from that problem. However, find a version without the tacked on sex scenes and it's pretty damn good.

Thanks varmintx so much for your great info!

I like subtle horror(Frankenstein, Wolfman, etc.), not real gory & westerns(Clint Eastwood, 40's-70's), sci-fi(Star Wars, Star Trek), good crime/drama(British, UK & USA). Seems like Clutch Cargo was like Anime!

Watch these animus and you're all set:
Cowboy Bebop
Fullmetal Alchemist
Ghost in the Shell
Gurren Lagann

There are loads more to choose from but those are some of the essentials imo.

For the best experience, watch the TV show, then the End of Evangelion film, then the new movies. The last two episodes of the TV series and the EoE film complement each other and the new movies are a different and more modern spin on the property. Definitely don't skip episode 24 or you will miss the introduction of Kaoru.

Not much, truth be told. At least not much anime in its entirety. I don't recall a lot of the names off the top of my head but I remember gratuitous fanservice/harem/fap material appearing in shows/movies that I otherwise might have continued watching. Most of the time though, my main problem is just finding something I'll actually be interested in checking out.
