Don't you just hate when people care about stuff that doesn't interest you?

Gawd, that's the worst.

Technically I did for the Tarantino box set and the Star Wars complete collection as I already had QT's individual releases and the split releases of Star Wars.

So far, I'm only guilty of repurchasing a previously owned movie for the following reasons:

Batman Begins ---> Steelbook
The Dark Knight ---> Steelbook
Sherlock Holmes ---> Steelbook
The Avengers ---> BBY LE exclusive set (limited edition my a** )
E.T. ---> Digibook
Fast & The Furious 1-5 ---> New Slipcovers w/ F&F6 movie cash
Gangster Squad ---> BBY Slipcover
Star Trek Into Darkness ---> WM Steelbook
The Twilight Zone S1-S4 ---> Complete Series Boxset (thanks DVDPlanet! )

I try to avoid doing this...I mean, I have a limited amount of money for Blus in general. So if something gets re-issued in a steelcase or something else, I usually give it a pass unless I can get it very cheap and I can sell the original disc and the UV/digital copy (if any) from the new version. Be careful what you wish for - you might just get it.

Digital download only will spell the end of lots of things - a lot of people (myself included) will simply just not buy films anymore.

Ugh, what are you doing on bluray.com!?
-----------------------
Anyway, I've sold quite a few standard blu rays to get the steelbook versions. E.g...

BLACK RAIN - replaced standard UK release with German steelbook.
SPARTACUS - replaced standard UK release with ltd edition UK digibook.
EXORCIST - replaced standard UK release with Canadian steelbook
BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA - replaced US release with UK steelbook pre-order
ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS - replaced US release with Arrow UK one, then replaced that with Arrow's steelbook that was released later.
etc etc...

I've also done the opposite with films I'm not so wild about. E.g. I sold the UK steelbook of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS and replaced it with the standard US release I won on ebay and made about £10 in the process lol.

Generally I sell the old versions and therefore don't lose much money and on occasion make a little bit.

I just think if you really like a film you should have it in the best looking package. Artwork is important Double dipping is where I draw the line, I simply don't have enough free cash for that! And if I'm buying a blu to replace a DVD I always sell the DVD, even if its just for pence, because there's no point having it take up space.

Man of Steel - DigiBook & Steelbook
Dark Knight Rises - DigiBook & Steelbook
Batman (1989) - DigiBook & Steelbook

Those are the duplicates that come to mind. As far as replacing blurays for newer or "better" packaging, I've done that twice. The first was Batman Returns. I swapped out my amaray copy for the steelbook. I thankfully made my money back on eBay for the old copy. The other was Boondock Saints. My girlfriend bought the first edition for me as a present, but understood when I sold that one and picked up the Comic Con edition. It's a sick thing.

In my humble opinion, it's lame and a huge waste of money to buy again just for the packaging. So no, I haven't done that. I don't even buy again when a better edition comes out.

I've never double-dipped on a movie just because of the packaging, but I did recently sell my Image Entertainment copy of John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 in order to upgrade to the Scream Factory edition. The transfers of the actual film are reportedly identical, but I wanted the added extras on the Scream Factory edition, and the packaging is noticeably better on the Scream Factory edition as well.

I try not to, although finding out my girlfriend's mom had never seen The Departed was good enough reason to get the steelbook and give her the standard BD.

Boondock Saints 2 doesn't count cuz it's a new cut and more extras. Watchmen same reason for the UC. Terminator doesn't count either, the new transfer is too good and all covers suck.

Besides a quick return on the old Halloween BD, that's all I've double-dipped on the BD front.

Those Kill Bill, T2 and Total Recall steels at Best Buy keep calling me, but so far I've held off. I try not to package dip anymore, breaking my bad old dvd habits slowly but surely. Stay strong Horse!

This thread should be merged with the one asking if you consider collecting an addiction

Yup, I'm guilty of double-dipping for the sake of acquiring specialty packaging. In some cases, I do it for space-saving reasons. For instance, I had all 6 seasons of LOST on 2 formats and varying packaging styles and swapped everything for the Collector's set. Did the same with the Twilight Zone series. I guess some of us are on a constant quest for perfection. Hey, if you can do it without starving yourself or skimping on bills, I say why not.

Ah yes, the old amarays being used as presents tactic! To be fair, I use them as "bonus" presents in addition to proper presents!

I confess that I have, but I keep it to a minimum and usually only if it's one of my favorite movies and there is added value -- such as Brokeback Mountain's re-release that came with a slip, a DVD, and a digital copy, whereas the first release was a single-disc only.

Not a chance. Frankly all that matters to me is the video/audio quality. I have and will continue to buy upgrades for this purpose.

I don't watch the new packaging, I watch the movie.
Unless there's an upgrade to PQ/AQ and maybe extras, otherwise- no way. I couldn't care less about whether it's a slip cover or steelbook.

I'm in the minority here on this site though
