I'm don't know a ton about Japanese film, but I'd also recommend the Mizoguchi Eclipse set. I revisit it pretty regularly, too. The heart in these movies comes through real strongly despite the cinematic and cultural differences. These are two of my favorite Eclipse sets...the most surprising to me. |

I've also had the Travels with Hiroshi Shimizu set in my wishlist. Does anyone have any opinions on that one? |

Eyes Without a Face is a disturbing, yet oddly beautiful, horror film that really pushed the envelope during its time. I won't spoil any of it for you, but it will certainly haunt you. Diaboloque is one of the original "misdirection movies", meaning that it was the direct ancestor of the M. Night Shyamalan movies and such. It plays out quite brilliantly. The 39 Steps is a superb adventure/espionage film, and it's my favorite Hitchcock title in the Criterion Collection, although I love all of them. The Gold Rush is wonderful filmmaking, and the 1925 version on the disc is probably tied with City Lights as my favorite Chaplin movie. The chicken hallucination always cracks me up. |

Yay! I'm going to be getting some new Criterion movies soon. Chasing Amy will no longer be alone on my shelf. Three eighties cult classics will be mine by late January. Long live the new flesh!!!
The others are Repo Man and Eating Raoul. ![]() Maybe Fear and Loathing as well... That one depends entirely on gift cards. |

in terms of great Eclipse sets, I'd also throw out there the Larisa Shepitko set. It's only two movies but both are great, and if you like war movies then this set is a must. The Ascent is alongside Paths of Glory my favorite war movie.

I am a huge fan of the Eclipse series. They contain some of the most outstanding films in the Criterion Collection. As a rule, the Japanese sets are easy to recommend. All the sets I have seen are excellent.
Eclipse 4: Raymond Bernard Eclipse 28: The Warped World of Koreyoshi Kurahara Eclipse 5: The First Films of Samuel Fuller Eclipse 15: Travels with Hiroshi Shimizu Eclipse 21: Oshima's Outlaw Sixties - not for everyone, but I absolutely love it and consider it essential. Here are some thoughts I had previously posted on some of these sets: Eclipse 11: Larisa Shepitko - [Show spoiler] Eclipse 13: Kenji Mizoguchi's Fallen Women - [Show spoiler] Eclipse 21: Oshima's Outlaw Sixties - [Show spoiler] Eclipse 28: The Warped World of Koreyoshi Kurahara - [Show spoiler]

Just ordered the MOC version of The Burmese Harp on Blu-ray so that will probably get an upgrade from Criterion to blu-ray shortly.

I'm one of those people that has a hard time buying DVDs now that I'm on the Blu Ray train.
I did just get my first Eclipse set though, the Post War Kurosawa one at my wife's urging as she loves his movies so much. So, hopefully it'll be the first of many. |
