Because, moviemaking is a business first and foremost (unfortunately), thus whatever makes even the slighest bit of money is probably going to get at least one sequel, if not more.

SPOILER ALERT! PLEASE BYPASS THIS POST IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THE DESCENT AND PLAN TO IN THE FUTURE.

OK so I read the synopsis at the link provided and this is truly a dumb idea. They're going back in to find the survivors of the group??? There were no damn survivors!! All of the cast is back to reprise their roles??? How is this possible if they all died??? Why in the world would the main character even agree to go back with a search party? You'd have to drag me kicking and screaming to get me to go back into those caves.

This is such a bad idea and the all of the elements that made the first one so successful as a horror movie no longer exists therefore the scare factor just won't be there in the sequel.

Truly a bad idea.

I'll just pretend that it's not happening. Way to spoil a good movie.

Paper thin plot. The first one was great. This scares me for different reasons

And in the case of most horror films, it's because it was the indepent production of one small-time producer who never really had any other big tentpole to go to, and fell back on playing it safe by pretending his one lucky little January-diversion horror-cheapie was a "cult sleeper hit", to avoid taking risks with any new material--
Keeping the tradition that horror sequels don't actually have to have anything to do with the first movie, so long as at least one of the producers is the same and the concept still kills the new characters off in a marketably similar motif to the first movie.

In both cases, for those who wonder why someone's making a third "Jeepers Creepers" movie.
