would be defintly a great choice.. pale flower is a nice mix between noir and "new wave" yakuza movie. i loved it.
high and low does beat a lot of kuroawa's samurai flicks.

Both Nashville and Pale Flower were among my narrowed down choices. Any recommendations, or info, on Pale Flower? The description sounds great, but still a blind buy for me. Any help? ;-)

I just finished watching Fellini's La Strada via TCM's broadcast of it.

I will admit that for most of the film, I was rather cold and reserved towards all of the characters. I didn't feel pity or anything for them. They actually got under my skin a bit.

The last 20 minutes or so changed my opinion completely, though. It was great, emotional acting, especially by Anthony Quinn. The score was really moving, as well.

I'd like to rewatch it someday so I will definitely welcome a Blu-ray upgrade in the future.

On a related note, during the Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday sales I picked up a handful of Westerns, Man with No Name Trilogy and The Outlaw Joesy Wales. I still need to buy Unforgiven.

If you're looking for another good Western set, Target currently has The Magnificent Seven Collection (4 movies) for $15. Can't beat that with a stick. Hell, the first film alone is worth that.

I really enjoyed The Searchers, and think that John Wayne is a phenomenal actor.

The story goes that after John Ford saw Howard Hawks's Red River he said, "I didn't know the big lug could act." Ford's next film with Wayne was The Searchers.

I really don't like Wayne much as an actor, to be honest. But I probably have more DVDs/BDs with him than with any other actor because he had a knack for getting roles in a lot of top-notch films. But every now and then, he gave an extraordinarily good performance, and The Searchers was arguably the best of them.

The only Ford/Wayne film that I don't care for is The Quiet Man, and that probably has more to do with me than with the film.

But seriously, there is no way they'll release this even though they've released something similar in Hausu.

Vampire's Kiss, if ever released, will probably be a Shout Factory or Twilight Time title. Maybe Arrow in the UK. Eitherway, I hope someone announces it soon.

In an ideal world, Vampire's Kiss or at least ONE of Nicolas Cage's movie would receive the Criterion treatment. Maybe they're being a bit too snooty? Wouldn't surprise me.

However, I'll take any label's Blu-ray release of Vampire's Kiss as long as it has good picture and sound quality.

I bought that one on DVD a while back and haven't watched it yet. I'll end up watching it along with the new westerns I've just gotten. I've heard good things though.

Oh, it's a highly praised film. You'll probably like it. But as I said, my reaction to it probably has more to do with me than with the film. My problem with it is that the way Wayne's character treats O'Hara's makes me grind my teeth.

Yeah, I know, you've got to take such things in context, and there is a reason for it in the film. But for me it's analogous to feeling uncomfortable about blackface scenes (or other racial stereotyping) in otherwise terrific movies like Swing Time or The Jazz Singer. For whatever reason, I find the latter content easier to deal with than the former.

I'm on a film noir kick, and I've heard Pale Flower mentioned several times in context to that genre. Other than that, I'm flying blind.

So I got to see Seconds for the first time. Pretty awesome stuff; it's a neat premise, and the camera work is off the chain. I'd give it a 4.5/5, and I am glad to have blind-bought it. Will have to see Seven Days in May next, so I can say that I've seen all of the Paranoia Trilogy.

Next, I'll be checking out A Man Escaped, Pale Flower, The Organizer, and The Uninvited. I also got the Zatoichi collection and City Lights on their way.

I just finished watching Murnau's City Girl. This is a beautiful film on Blu-ray, and this one strikes me as a likely influence on John Ford's work. It's not quite on the level of Sunrise, but it's a strong film on its own terms. Unlike Sunrise, this film is distinctly American in terms of visuals and tone.

What are the films that form the Paranoia Trilogy? I have Seconds waiting on my shelf.
