Not sure exactly what your tastes are, but maybe start out with some of the more "accessible" titles. The following come to mind:

Badlands
Blow Out
The Spy Who Came In From The Cold
Yojimbo/Sanjuro
Rashomon
The Seventh Seal

and a personal favorite: Revanche

I just love seeing a hot-tempered redheaded Irish woman. I have one of those...

Anyway, to get back on topic--I thought I was done after the 50% sale and all the BF deals, but I am intrigued by "Nashville." It would be a blind buy, but I may pair it with "On the Waterfront," which I really like, or maybe "High and Low" or another Kurosawa film. The problem is it doesn't look like "Nashville" is available for in-store pickup via the website so I'm wondering if anyone is seeing it in stores. I would like to at least get my 10% member discount.

My local B&N doesn't have Nashville so I called to have them order it for instore pickup and he said it is back ordered 1.5 to 3 weeks.

Does bestbuy.com ship to Canada? They have it for $64.99.

OK, even so it is only $3 more than B&N's now terminated $19.99 sale.

I still want 4 Criterion Titles of already released movies:

Frances Ha
Repulsion
Shock Corridor
Investigation...

And of course Rififi and IAMMMMW when they come out. I'l be on holiday when Rififi is released and will wait to see the trend. As for IAMMMMW, I put in pre-order the day it was announced and will not change it. For that film, with all that restoration, $31.99 is a bargain.

Here's my epic haul today...

Pale Flower
Nashville
Shane
(non-Criterion, but it was finally available at Barnes & Noble and the price was right)
Mary Poppins ($5 at Best Buy, since I had $20 of Rewards Certificates after my MacBook purchase last month)

Woo hoo!

I'm actually going way out on a limb with the blind buy of Nashville, because I've never been particularly jazzed up about Robert Altman films for some reason. I've seen so much universal acclaim for this particular film, though, that curiosity got the best of me.

Before I watch any of these tonight, though, I'm going to watch Man of Steel, because I just rented it from the Redbox dollar booth down the street.

I just started collecting Criterions this year and I'm up to 31. I suggest you take all the posts to your question thus far and see which ones have been recommended the most often. In other words, tally up the "votes." That will give you a pretty good idea where to start. Then find reviews, on this site and others, to read. That way you can decide if a particular titles fits your tastes.

I have to admit that I have broadened my tastes because of Criterions. And some of my 31 I haven't seen yet, but am really looking forward to. Here is a wide spectrum for you to choose from, but still more mainstream since you're looking for rewatchability:

12 Angry Men (absolutely essential)
Being John Malkovich
Blow Out
Eating Raoul
The Game
The Night of the Hunter (absolutely essential)
A Night to Remember
On the Waterfront (absolutely essential)
Rosemary's Baby
The Wages of Fear (the only foreign language on my list, but not in my collection. There are many others to choose from)

Good luck.

Why are Che, The Leopard and Heaven's Gate not part of the sale? Or am I doing something wrong?

Do not pass this up!

I have the region free UK Blu-ray of Sabrina, and I cannot recommend this movie enough. Audrey Hepburn is at her best and most beautiful, while Humphrey Bogart and William Holden are both cooler than ever.

My top 5 of those I have recently seen:
1 Ikiru (dvd only)
2 Rosemary's Baby
3 Au Revoir, Les Enfants
4 The Lady Vanishes
5 Le Deuxieme Souffle (dvd only)

Another 5 GREAT titles from what I had seen before (in no order)
On The Waterfront
The Killing
Badlands
12 Angry Men
Hoop Dreams (dvd only)
Thief (out in January)

best thing to do is to just read the discussions here.. see what piques your interest. check out the blu-ray disc reviews on this site (they're fantastic) and then check out rottentomatoes to see what the critical consensus is on the film.

have fun!

Is there a consensus on which online review site is best - iMDB or RT?

I have never really used RT, something about the site just screams amateur

In actuality, you really have that backwards as far as the ratings go.

The ratings on IMDB are just ratings from site users - normal, everyday folks. Amateur movie watchers. Rotten Tomatoes' main ratings come from combining critic's reviews. They also have user ratings, but those aren't the main ones used to rate films.

So, it depends on where you put more stock - the average of what professional critics have to say or votes by average joes. Personally, I've always found the main ratings on Rotten Tomatoes to be far more indicative of how good a movie is or isn't than IMDB. Metacritic is also a pretty good ratings site that performs a similar function as Rotten Tomatoes, but it uses different (and some would say more accurate) ways of coming up with the average scores.
