You don't have to run the slides but it also allows you to make sure you have no pixel issues right out of the box as well.

Chad B is doing some AMAZING work on these 2013 sets. His post calibration reports are darn near perfect. I already had mine calibrated but I am debating getting him to come do it to mine.
