USA Dragonfly Squadron 3D Blu-ray (1954) [Region Free] Remastered edition coming Fall 24

Dragonfly Squadron was only released on 3D Blu-ray in the USA. The disc is Region Free. A newer remastered version that also includes an anaglyph version and 3D shorts is due for release in Fall 2024 by BayView entertainment. That too is expected to be Region Free but this has not yet been confirmed.

Don't let one review on IMDB discourage you, it's a pretty good film and the 3-D is excellent.

While filmed in dual 35mm Polaroid 3-D in August 1953, interest in the process had greatly diminished and DRAGONFLY SQUADRON was released flat only in March 1954. For decades, historians and film buffs believed the original left and right elements were long gone and considered this film a "lost" 3-D title, never to be seen by anyone. Until now.

The 3-D Film Archive has found the lost elements and will present this Golden Age 3-D feature for the first time in the original stereoscopic 1.85:1 widescreen version. We are performing a complete 2K digital restoration utilizing the left/right camera negatives and master 35mm fine grains. This restored HD 3-D version is better than ever before as a result of shot by shot stereoscopic digital correction and alignment techniques.

Edit: I just spent five minutes trying to convert the stupid link so that it would play the trailer embedded, why can't we just copy and paste the embed code like on every other website??

Great news! Never knew this movie existed in 3D and the trailer jolts my interest. It's wonderful that the 3-D Film Archive is presenting this 1953 native 3D production for the first time in 3D to the world and in widescreen to boot!

In 20 years, James Cameron, the inventor of 3D, will create the world's first time machine and travel back to 1953 under a pseudonym to shoot this movie.

Seriously though, I'm looking forward to this one as well. I'm really intrigued to see how 3D was used in the 50's beyond Creature and Dial M.

In 1950, as the Korean peninsula is drawn closer to war, a stern Air Force Major (John Hodiak), is assigned to train a squadron of South Korean pilots, making them combat-ready in half the usual time. At the air base at Kongju, Brady comes face to face with a former flame (Barbara Britton), the wife of an army medical officer (Bruce Bennett). When enemy forces invade, most of the American personnel are evacuated, but Brady remains behind with the barely-trained South Korean troops, and bravely diverts the Russian-backed North Korean army.

Completed in late 1953, just as the original 3-D craze was in decline, DRAGONFLY SQUADRON was only released in a standard 2-D version. This restoration, specially prepared by the 3-D Film Archive, LLC, is the first time the film can be seen in stereoscopic 3-D, as originally intended. (3D version available on Blu-ray only. Blu-ray also contains 2D version. Both versions of the film are on a single disc).

Thank you very much!

The Allied Artists studio-built 3-D rig had a fixed interaxial. The DP was Harry Neumann who had done a fabulous job on THE MAZE. If you've seen that in 3-D, you know that it has a VERY deep 3-D image and DRAGONFLY is the same. Most likely shot with 50mm lenses, it's very natural and is not gimmicky. If you're looking for lots of "popout" this is not the film for you. With that said, there are some excellent shots which take very good advantage of multi-layering and I feel the 3-D ads a lot to the film.

It also has some well-done battle scenes, including one which utilized a little too many pyrotechnics. On April 28, 1954, Variety reported that somebody sued Allied Artists claiming he was "thrown from his bed and injured at 4 AM last August 28 from an explosion of between 15 and 50 sticks of dynamite."

There's no other mention in the trades so I suspect the lawsuit didn't get very far!

This sound interesting. Have never seen this film. Of course, I love classic movies so this is a must have and in 3-D! Love the artwork too! And yes, 'Thank you' Robert for your work on this and other classic films. Classic movies are our doorway of sorts to yesteryear.

Default Respect for "Dragonfly Squadron"

I was reading a lot last year about North Korea and the awful situation there. Seriously, I must have read five books on the subject.

Then I saw Dragonfly Squadron last September at the Expo. I was struck by the fact that the filmmakers were so obviously committed to making an earnest and serious film about the early days of the war within the parameters of their budget. It’s a film I found myself respecting, and enjoying.

But I must say, in my view the 3-D in Dragonfly is technically more accomplished than that of The Maze. As fine as The Maze is, the folks at Allied Artists must have learned another thing or two by the time they loaded up the cameras for Dragonfly. Yes, the film is light on “popout” effects, for those of us who love that, but the incredible layering and volume in the stereo cinematography is still gorgeous. Not only is this a Day One purchase for me, I am committed to buying two copies, to show my support for your efforts, Bob, and those of your colleagues.

Thank you very much and bavanut, I really appreciate your comments on the film and I agree with you completely.

You'll be happy to know that what you'll be seeing on Blu-ray is a VAST improvement over the world premiere screening at the Expo.

Greg Kintz, Technical Director for the 3-D Film Archive, has painstakingly aligned and corrected any vertical problems from the principal photography. This was only the second time out for this camera rig and there were still some bugs to be worked out.

He has also perfectly matched the left/right sides so it's much easier on the eyes than the dual-35mm print.

In addition, due to technical problems in the booth, we had to run it full-frame and the new master is in the correct aspect ratio of 1.66:1.

And finally, we've put the Intermission in the correct spot. For the Expo, it was spliced randomly at the end of a reel. We've also fixed the brief audio sync issue that you heard.

If it's okay with you, may I share your comments on the film in my thread at the Home Theater Forum? Very few people have ever seen this in 3-D and your astute observations would be very helpful. Here is a link to the discussion: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/topi...on-3d-blu-ray/

Thank you again to everybody for your kind words. I've passed them along to Greg Kintz and they are very much appreciated!

Mr. Furmanek, you absolutely have my permission to post my remarks wherever you feel they will do the most good. If you wish, you may attribute them to me, David M. Ballew, or to my screen handle, "bavanut," whichever is thought best.

To be honest, I'm not sure.

I suspect it will be the usual Olive Films region code.

As soon as pre-orders are available, I'll post a link.
