This film is a sure fire candidate for 4K ready after Robocop. I would bet a lot of money on it.

Just got this from Foxconnect!

It is a 3D/2D combo Blu-ray plus a DVD.

It is a lenticular cover, but its badly done. Very dark...like you screwed up the brightness and contrast on your TV until everything was shrouded in blackness. It is a transform effect: The same artwork from the case is the first image, in the swap image Arnie is covered with the heat vision of the Predator and a scope target overlays the entire thing.

I don't know if I got some weird dud that made it so dark or if they just blew it. Hopefully others will comment on how good their cover is.

thatscifiguy, sorry to hear about the slip cover issue. How do you like the 3D? I hear it's mild but decent.

Good to hear. I'll check Best Buy to see if it'll be in store this week.

This has been confirmed by Fox Home Entertainment. Disk 1 will play in 2D and 3D on 3D players and in 2D on 2D players. 2D version on Disk 1 is the Ultimate Hunter Edition in the US, UK, and Germany.
Dredd 3D was also like this, selling a single disc version 2D and 3D blu Ray for 19.99 on release week.

No, Im thinking it will be similar to Jurassic Park 3D. I see this as an easy cash grab because the movie was already DNR'd for the UE.

Late watch tonight.

3D is mild to occasionally medium with a nice roundness most of the time. The quality of the conversion is pretty good, and I noticed no ghosting on my passive set. The jungle setting actually gave many opportunities for nice layering and depth, with branches and vines between the camera and actors working particularly well and providing some of the more distinct 3D elements. It does come and go to some extent, especially at the end when its night and the 3D gets swallowed into the darkness. Nevertheless, IMHO its a good enhancement to the film.

I think it really benefited from the fact that action films of the time favored steadycam instead of the shakycam of today, and weren't victims of the epileptic gnat on speed fast twitch editing you often see in modern films. For example, Jumper and Gamer both suffer (among other reasons) from fast editing that makes it hard for the 3D effect to become apparent before you are looking at something new.

I place this one's 3D well ahead of Jumper and Gamer, but Jurassic Park is superior.

And yes, the DNR is there but I think maybe it helped the 3D in a weird way. Still, at the beginning in particular you get that truly disturbing wax figure dead look to their faces. That becomes less of an issue once they get into the jungle and are covered in sweat, blood and dirt so it is what it is.

I gotta say after skimming through this that I'm really impressed with the 3d here and think that Fox is finally getting their home conversion act together! I badly want a copy of this (especially considering that I still haven't seem the movie yet *facepalm* ) and I keep drooling over the particle 3d effects in the conversion here! So many flying sparks!!!!! lol

I just finished watching the 3d version and completely agree with your post. The 3d is pretty good and adds to the film. The particles from all the explosions stood out. Very happy I kept my order.

So by the sound of it, it's a good conversion.

Still keeping my copy of Predator Edition as it is signed by the man himself.

Yeah, it's definitely nothing I would complain about. Some shots have stronger 3D than others but pretty good in my opinion.

So there is a 3d disc and the 2nd disc is a copy of the UHE? Is there not a new 2d transfer included?

No new transfer, the 3D uses the UHE edition as well just added 3D. Also the 3D and 2D are on 1 disc the second disc is a dvd.

The pre order on Amazon does not list a Region. Usually if I blind buy based on this it works on region B.

Does anyone know if this is region locked yet? I am going to assume because of the listing and that the UHE was able to play on region B that this will also.

My region A player is PS4 and it won't play 3D....so if anyone can confirm?

From the video samples at the top of the page, I'm mildly impressed... which is more than I thought I'd ever say for one of these JVC conversions. There are issues and it's fairly flat but the conversion quality is mostly good. If they keep doing this and convert a flick I really like at this quality, I'm in.

What extras are missing, if any, from UHE? Are they only on the DVD?

Not sure if this reviewer is credible. He states in the 3D quality portion that "there is not a ghost to be seen". It is common knowledge that ghosts are not disc dependent but only display issues. Also he states: "And this is probably the best the film has ever looked – much better than previous DVD and Blu-ray releases."
This is the same UHE addition transfer that was used for the 3D, correct?

I had some small hope for a new transfer but this seems like another pointless release. If they're going to start selling us the same movies again and again (this time in 3D! ) they should at least give us a new transfer. Jus sayin'.

I’ll keep my original BD with the second disc of the DVD digipak until Fox gets their act together. Until then, I’m looking forward to the new Robocop BD.
