Default Iron Man to make $201 MILLION worldwide!!!!

'IRON MAN' IS A ROCKETMAN: SOARS TO $201 MILLION WEEKEND WORLDWIDE; ..."It Beat Will Smith And Jesus!"

Source

Quote:
SUNDAY AM: Here are the official blockbuster numbers -- Paramount Pictures release of Marvel Studios’ Iron Man, in 4,105 theaters, made an estimated $35,125,000 on Friday 5/2, an estimated $37,500,000 on Saturday 5/3, for an estimated 3-day weekend box office of $100,750,000. Advance screenings in select locations, about 2,500 venues, from 8:00 PM to midnight on Thursday 5/1 contributed an additional $3,500,000. With this addition, the total estimated box office is $104,250,000. The estimated international box office for the weekend is $96,750,000 from 57 territories. The total combined estimated global box office for Marvel Studios' Iron Man is $201,000,000.

"It beat Will Smith and Jesus!" gushed a Paramount insider referring to the openings of I Am Legend and The Passion Of The Christ. "It's just mind-blowing. Internally, some people were going into high 80sM and low 90sM but people were laughing at them. We had our own box office poll and maybe one person thought $100M." The monster numbers now make Iron Man the second biggest 3-day release for a non-sequel in the history of Hollywood, behind only Sony's first Spider-Man. The $140 million production self-financed by Marvel was also distibutor Paramount's biggest live action opening of all time. I understand that, at first, Paramount thought Thursday's advance screenings generated $5 million, but then discovered that $1.7 million ended up being for 12:01 AM shows so that money went towards Friday gross.

Well word of mouth. People saying how great the movie is, which makes more people see it, and people like me seeing it 4 times helps. I have told over 10 people who havent planned on seeing it how great it is, all saw it, all loved it, and they told their friends

Finally, a summer blockbuster that deserves it. I'm happy for marvel. I knew i should've bought stock in them back in 1997 when their stock was rock bottom and they filed for bankrupcy. marvel studios will make their own movies and not let other major studios screw up their characters. no more galactus clouds or 5'5" ben grimm aka "the thing" in a stupid costume. no more screwing up great, epic stories like the 'phoenix saga".

I have seen Iron Man, and it is an excellent movie, especially on DLP screens.

I was going to wait til it was in the 5$ bin on BD, but I got outvoted by my son, and will end up seeing it today. *sigh* I've never been a huge fan of Iron Man or the Avengers, and loved Avengers Annual #4 when they got taken down by one measly girl! I've still got that issue in mint condition just to laugh at how pitiful they all were.

I'm not surprised, it surpassed my expectations by far and I knew I would enjoy it.

This must be a very early estimate, because I'm typing this at 9:45am Sunday morning.

I thought Thursday was the 1/2 since screenings didn't start until 8pm.

I guess they're estimating Sunday already and presenting a 3.5 day total on Sunday morning.

Ironman isn't as well known outside of comic book geekdom as Superman, Batman or Spider-man. But everything I heard about this film leading up to its release convinced me it would do very well …but damn, not this well. That's frickin' amazing.

It'll be interesting to see whether Warner Bros. can top those numbers with The Dark Knight and if Marvel has successfully rebooted the Hulk franchise.

I've often wondered why we, the public, give one care about how much money a movie makes..

Do we care about Sony profits on PS3?
Do we care about how much profit a film makes on DVD?
Do we care about the bottom-line at Wal-Mart?

Seems that it is all about how much a movie makes, rather than if it is any good or not. POTC 3 was crap, but made a ton of money. So who cares?

Because whether people like it or not, box office/video sales defines a film's success.

Because if a good movie does really well, it's a message to Hollywood that good movies do well.

It is Thursday through Sunday. Sunday has always been estimated on Saturday night/Sunday morning. The furthest I've ever seen official estimates be off is by about $3 million (when the numbers are this large).
