Wow. I was thinking there was a numbered edition here in the US. I made a really sweet profit when I sold my IRobot Head awhile back

I watched it tonight. I really enjoyed the 3D effect in the jungle scenes. It was very immersive. But that immersion was instantly gone whenever a character's skin looked like wax. It took me out of the movie a couple times. I think I can get used to it though. It was just jarring and surprising after watching the movie so many times without DNR. At least now I know what Predator is like with Pixar looking actors instead of real human beings.
![]() There were several moments where there wasn't much 3D effect on screen, but maybe they were trying to avoid the pop up book effect on scenes that weren't framed well for 3D. I'm just guessing though. I suppose it could be laziness, or budget/time constraints, but overall I thought it was a good 3D transfer. I'm glad I bought it. I'll just have to get used to Arnold looking like a Madame Tussaud statue. ![]() |

Ok, I wound up picking this up at BB this morning. They had it hidden at the bottom of in an inconspicuous end cap away from the new releases and 3D section. Slipcovers on all of them were slightly beat up on the corners and the lenticular plastic on all of them were poorly glued, I didn't have the energy or desire to check other stores like I sometimes do when a store only has copies with slips that are crushed or torn.

Saw about half the film along with a few select scenes near the end. All in all, it's a very mixed bag. The 3D is actually pretty impressive but some scenes just looked "off" to me, mainly because of the massive DNR bath. Some shots look like Discovery HD theater, which seems out of place and then the close up shots with heavy DNR make it look like the actors have slathered Vaseline over their faces. It seemed like certain random shots seemed filmlike while the vast majority looked very much like "video." There seemed to be the occasional bit of artifacting around the edges of characters in movement (a conversion aftereffect?) and on occasion there seemed to be a bit of motion blur smearing, especially around scenes with a lot of smoke. I surprisingly found the Ultimate Hunter edition to be completely watchable on an older 720P set back in the day, but even at 47 inches on my LG the flaws in 3D were a bit too distracting to make it an enjoyable presentation. Will definitely be seeking out the 2008 version now, with its warts and all. Besides that, the Predator head is awesome so I consider the 3D version to be a bonus curiosity piece at this point. Long story short, using the Ultimate Hunter Edition as a base was a bad idea for this release. Hoping Lowry can someday work their magic on this ala their Aliens release.

I called Best Buy before heading out. Took the sales associate awhile to find one but she had a few and put it on hold for me til a I got there.
When I got there..... There were STILL NOT ON THE FLOOR YET!! I looked and not one shelf home or sticker price could be found. I went up to the desk and got my copy. I asked the sales associate, out of curiosity to what she would say, where did you find this copy?? She said they had to look for it in the back!!! I really don't like my local BB and how they are displaying their movies/new releases!!! Reminds me of Circuit City and their disorganized and at times total absence of a new release. Glad I got my copy though. Thank you Mary for going the extra mile....but you guys need to get your new releases on the floor ASAP!! 2 days late is ridiculous. |

Another dreadful JVC conversion...better than I Robot and Jumper...just.
The jungle scenes only look slightly better because the scenes kept being shot through foliage which gives a better impression of depth. Like the other Fox conversions though it looks like it has been filmed with cardboard cutouts. As I said in another thread, Fox need to quit the conversion game before we never get away from the negative "Clash Of The Titans" view on post conversions and seal the fate of 3D forever |

While this can be surprising for a big retailer like BB, and certainly frustating for a consumer, it's probably a very long stretch to call 2 days late "ridiculous".
![]() I've seen French retailers being 2 weeks late on certain releases, and when they got them, they only got 2 copies and that was it. And of course, sometimes, they just never get any copy (try to find a season of Star Trek TNG on BD in a French retailer, for instance...). I mean, I don't get it on Day one or Day two, I still have plenty of stuff to watch meanwhile. ![]() |

I can not believe how good predator 3d turned out at least 60 percent of movie has strong depth even a few pop outs for good measure. I can't believe same guys that did I robot did this, and for everybody complaining about the waxing look that has nothing to do with conversion but the source which by the way 90 percent of time looks fine also print is as clean as ever.

I'm floored to see such positive reviews! Can't wait to pick this up, I'm holding off because I think my wife got it for me for Christmas but if not, sold next Thursday.
Looks like Fox+JVC has come a long way. I still hope one day they decide to dust off the ID4 3d project and give it the conversion it deserves. |

Sounds like the 2-D version of this is going to be same messed-up transfer as the Ultimate Hunter Edition had. Way to go Fox, spend all of that money on 3-D conversion for a film which was never intended that way rather than doing a proper transfer like you should've done to begin with. And with this franchise dead in the water, this is probably the last release the film will have.

I hate me some grain, and I remember actually liking the Ultimate Hunter Edition.
I actually own the movie in limited edition bust form, but I'm a nerd about actually opening the box to watch it. ![]() Given the positive reviews, I may have to pick up a separate copy and give it a play! |

Count me as one who gives this a huge thumbs up! Watched the first half of the movie and all I can say is WOW!
Keep in mind, I have not watched this movie since I bought the DVD when DTS 5.1 was introduced to DVDs. So I had not had the opportunity to view the so called "wax" edition that used DNR to clean up the grain. But I honestly don't think the 3D would have been as effective using a transfer with the grain in tact. All you have to do is point to Top Gun 3D. I still feel that was fairly well done, but it was honestly hard to watch a 3D film with as much grain as it had since 3D films frankly don't have much grain so I'm not used to seeing it in 3D. With this 3D transfer, I felt like I was watching something new and different, not an 80s action flick that was converted to 3D as an afterthought. When watching it in 2D, yes... I would prefer seeing it the way I remember grain and all. But in 3D, the DNR'd version works best. Also, when I say WOW, I'm not comparing it or saying its on par with any of the recent top 3D releases from the past couple of months, but I'm referring to the wow factor I felt seeing how the 3D added to the presentation of a movie I watched many times on DVD. I watched Percy Jackson last night and it was good (closer to OK ) but just didn't wow me like this did. Perhaps it's also because I never saw this on the theater so I've never seen it on such a large screen as I have now. Either way, two huge thumbs up from me so far. I plan on watching the 2nd half tomorrow. |
