Brazil Free Birds 3D Blu-ray (2013) [Region B Locked / Free]

Free Birds was released on 3D Blu-ray in Australia, Brazil and a few European countries. The Australian and Brazilian editions are fully English-friendly while the European editions have the introductory text in their native languages. The Brazilian, German and Italian editions are region free while the others are Region B locked.

Original post:
Missed this in 3D in theaters. Saw the 2D on Thanksgiving. I pretty much agree with RT (20-something %), it's nothing special. There are a few cute parts in it.

Anyway, the pre-order is up here on Blu-ray.com. It's a combo pack. There's no 3D version listed though. Is it only going to be released in 2D? This hasn't set the box office on fire (it's a million or two shy of making its budget back according to boxofficemojo -- I forget how much something has to make to turn a profit with P & A and all that).

It's the first release for Austin, TX-based Reel FX. Maybe they don't want to stick $$ into something they think people won't buy? I know 3D popularity has been dropping in the theaters all around me (going by the eye test). But I still thought every movie that was released in 3D in theaters got a 3D Blu release (save for Shark Night a couple years ago).

Does anybody know anything about this one?

I'm worried about this. I saw it at the theater in 3D and loved it. It would majorly suck it they don't release a 3D Blu-ray version of it.

I'm betting it will see a 3D release. The movie studio (?) needs to consider all home release options to make up for the cost of making it vs how much $$ it took in at the theaters, imo.

I didn't see any TV ads for this movie Free Birds, if there were any before its release in theaters. Owen Wilson plays a voice I read, if I remember.

I was mildly interested in seeing what this was about, but then had too much other stuff to do.

Was the 3D in Free Birds (animated) for those who saw it mild, medium or strong? Thanks.

I'd say it was medium 3D with some stronger 3D scenes here and there. It really enhanced the look of the movie and I enjoyed seeing it at the theater. I hope they release a 3D version but I'm still concerned. Dvdempire has only the regular Blu-ray edition listed as well.

It is odd were not hearing of a 3D pre order. Maybe it's not worth it to the studio to release a 3D version (since the movie did not perform as they had projected in the theaters)???

Cool

I won't be getting it on Blu-ray if they don't release a 3D version.

Default We need to let them know we want a 3D release of Free Birds!!!

I saw Free Birds in 3D at the theater and loved it!!! It had really enjoyable 3D with great depth. It's a shame they're not releasing a 3D version on Blu-ray. I was wondering whether we as a community might email them and possibly persuade them to reconsider and include a 3D version???

Edit: There have been far lower profile animation films like Escape From Planet Earth and Tad The Lost Explorer that enjoyed really good 3D releases. I just don't want this to become a trend where films are theatrically released in 3D only to be short changed and released exclusively 2D at home release.

Do we no for sure that they are not including the 3D version as an unadvertised bonus, or not really promoted bonus?

Sort of like to the arctic said it was a bonus on the package, or like Spy Kids 4 , or Escape from planet earth?

Er....we DO??

[Show spoiler](And yes, I know, and I'm guessing the one-disk hybrid announcements come later, so the studio can cut their losses.
But then, I wasn't surprised when we didn't get Nutcracker 3D in the US, either.)

Films recently released in 3D theaters but not on 3D blu Ray?

Resident Evil Damnation 3D (blu ray 2D only)
Beowulf 3D (blu ray 2D only)
Rango 3D (blu ray 2D only)
Free Birds (2D blu ray)

And many more from years ago.

I think it has to do with how much it made at the box office in most cases. Other times it's who is holding the rights to release it.

Damnation was never released theatrically and Rango wasn't in 3D.

Thanks for the clarification.

Overseas I remember hearing plans for RE: D in Japan or something but I'm guessin that didn't pan out, as no blu ray 3D version ever surfaced, just the 2D sadly. I still didn't see it yet in hopes it would eventually arrive on 3D, but it's not happening from the studio this late in the game.

Okay, you're right about Rango. I just remember seeing it released on blu ray and thinking, "No 3D version"? There's an interview out there with Gore Verbinski and he says 3D wasn't necessary in his opinion, so they didn't bother.

Well, Beowulf is multi-layered of the reasons it has not come out on 3D BD...

It was released on Blu-ray back in 2008, we'll before the 3D spec existed.

Its box office returns were a disaster ($198 million WW gross, against $150 million budget without marketing factored in.)

Likewise, DVD sales numbers were terrible.

Paramount probably doesn't think it was worth the money to create the 3D HD master. Sort of odd, since it was CG, but the home video release was an alternate cut, so that version may have never been fully rendered in 3D. (Much like other extended cut of films are 2D, while the theatrical cuts are in 3D.)

WB has taken over the distribution, so the title will probably never get re-visited, outside of new packaging.

You can watch the HD 3D version of Beowulf on Netflix. They have it, they just don't want to release it on a physical format apparently. Looks great in Super HD 3D though. I'm just glad I was able to see it in 3D at home. Even if the quality may not be quite as good as Blu-Ray, but it's close.

@Zivouhr

Yes, Damnation had a 3D theatrical release, but in Japan only. It is also available on 3D Blu from YesAsia, but in a Degeneration/Damnation combo pack with only Japanese audio.

I don't think that since home 3D has become big, that a movie was released in 3D at the cinema but not home release.

Just wouldn't make any sense not to release Free birds in 3D. Even if it didn't make a lot at the box office, that is just more reason to release it, that you can make up some revenue to the 3D home market.

Good point. Oftentimes the video sales do better than the theatrical for smaller movies, not counting the cost of production for physical media.

Good point. We should make our case to whoever decides the home release policy. If I wanted to email someone, who would it be?
