I was so tempted to upgrade, especially since Black Christmas is my favorite slasher movie of all time, but I passed. I've got the DVD, and I'm trying to stop re-buying movies I already own. I've wasted too much money on this stuff.

New to this forum, but the first thing that I could think of was asking if ANYONE has heard a thing about a 40th ann. edition for Black Christmas? I own all the versions currently available on DVD and Blu-Ray, but I think the definitive
version has yet to be released.
For one thing, subtitles are sorely missing on every edition out there. Also, the interviews with the cast which seemed so current are now at the point where they are dated. And what a treat it would be to have all the special features from all the releases on one BD release! Not that they would be in HD but damn it would be nice to have them in one place.

Cheers!

I hear ya...but being as Black Christmas 74 is also my favorite slasher pic (and a "pet" movie of mine) I had to grab it on BD. It is true that the image is not much upgraded due to the source material but had to get it.

I love how ridiculously lushy Kidder's character was in the movie. And judging from her forthright interviews in the special features, I imagine it wasn't much of a stretch for her.

If we get a 40th anniversary of Black Christmas (1974) on Blu-ray/DVD, it probably won't happen until late 2014 (November or December, most likely) - well over a year from now.

The last Blu-ray/DVD releases were in 2008, so we're probably about due for another one. I wish Don May could supervise a new release and work some magic like he did for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974).

I'd also buy the 40th anniversary, but like others have said, we might be waiting awhile.

Maybe they can do something to improve the video and audio quality of the last release. It's fairly weak compared to others in the genre. I did see that someone said that maybe there's nothing that can be done. Maybe they're wrong.

Or maybe they could pull what one of the Halloween releases did and have it come out on the 19th year instead of the 20th year or whatever it was...
I don't think it was a mighty seller so I hope they consider it. Someone did say that they need more money to fully restore it.

I remember she was found in someone's backyard, disheveled and incoherent, drunk or drugged or something.

This movie just gets better every time I watch it. The creepy score, a near perfect killer, and the fact that pretty much created the modern day slasher blueprint for others to follow make it a must own film...especially for Christmas!

Btw, avoid the remake at all costs!

I adore both the original and the remake. Its like they are both so different and amazing in their own ways.

Had they not called it Back X-Mas, and changed the villains names, I think more fans would have liked it. To me, once a film is branded as a remake, the actual fans think they should steer clear.

Which ruins the chances of seeing a decent remake, because believe it or not, they do exist.

And also, in the case of Black Christmas, the director of the original was on set and helped out the writers of the remake with what his version of the backstory was, and then the Final Destination guys just took it from there. And in all honesty, I don't think they did a bad job.

The remake started out great and had a lot of potential. Unfortunately the Agnes character completely ruined it for me. You can see that Glen Morgan was really passionate about the material, but I think he got carried away with trying to tell Billy's story. Not knowing anything about Billy made him more interesting imo.

go with the german release, Im pretty sure that has superior quality and more bonus content. The US release is fairly murky and the features aren't too deep.

The Region A release does have the original mono audio, if I'm not mistaken. The German release only has a new 5.1 mix.

Still uncertain whether to get this due to iffy reviews. I mean, I want to, since it's pretty much my favourite horror film ever, but is it enough of an improvement over the DVD to be worth importing?

I agree with you completely. A couple years ago, I was having dinner with a friend and seated in the booth next to us was Olivia Hussey eating with her family. I actually wrote a note on a napkin (didn't want to bother her but had to say something) and had a waiter give it to her. She actually was flattered and came over to our table and gave us juicy tidbits of the film, the director. So awesome. I told her how that film scared me so much as a kid...especially when the killer pulled her hair...which she said was pulled really hard...no stunt.
