I think the BD sale at Barnes & Noble has ended, is that right? I read here that it was going on until January 2, but just saw all the prices on the B&N website have reverted back to their original prices or only a marginal % off. I received a gift card for Christmas and was wondering if the 40% off is going on in-store only.

I would say that both are relatively safe blind buys. That being said, Criterion's presentation of The Leopard is absolutely wonderful. It's also one of the "epic" films that I revisit most often. (Any time I watch a Burt Lancaster or Alain Delon movie, I get the urge to watch The Leopard again, and I'm never disappointed when I do.)

I first watched The Red Shoes around the time that Black Swan was released in theaters (for thematic reasons). I enjoyed the film immensely, but have yet to get the urge to see it again.

I've got the Nikkatsu set as well, but haven't started watching them yet. Almost finished with the Ultimate Gangsters Collection, and then I'm going to try to start working on it. I've never seen any of the films in the When Horror Came to Shochiku set but it's on my Wish list as well.

That was weird. I noticed that too, the post disappeared. Anyway, it just said that I had read on here the blu-ray deal was continuing until January 2 at B&N, but most of the blu-rays I was looking at have now reverted to their original prices on the B&N website.

I just recently joined because I bought Criterion blu-rays for the first time and have a gift certificate for the store. I guess I'll wait it out until the next sale, unless 40% off in-store is still going on (??).

I love all the main characters (and several of the minor characters), but the one who impresses me the most no matter how many times I see this film is Donald O'Connor. I expect great singing and dancing from Kelly and Reynolds, but I grew up with O'Connor as the lead in the Francis the Talking Mule films, and it's always a revelation to see him holding his own with the other two.
Actually, Reynolds was the newbie. O'Connor had been in pictures since childhood and, as was the norm back then with the big studios, you learned to dance. I just don't think anyone expected him to match Kelly step-for-step, which he did; Big Time! My favorite numbers in the film are their "Moses Supposes" and "Fit As a Fiddle" ones. I'm always smiling afterwards.

"Pretentious" is often used in place of "art film". In other cases, I find people use it when they don't understand a film. It's OK to have differing opinions. I just find most of the time that word is used there's no evidence to support the claim.

What is the evidence to support a claim that it's not pretentious?

Oh, I know Reynolds was the newbie among the three. But I'd seen her singing and dancing in other things. As I said, I had only been familiar with O'Connor from the Francis movies at the point where I first saw Singin' in the Rain, and I was taken completely by surprise.

You can't go wrong with The Red Shoes (which apparently has awesome PQ/AQ as well on the CC disc) but over the last several months I've been closer and closer to thinking that The Leopard is the greatest film of all time, and I think if I was held at gunpoint nowadays and asked, it would be what I would say is the best film cinema has yet given us. And at the very least, its the most visually impressive. So take that as you will

I'm 99.9% sure you hate my guts, so you probably will not even acknowledge this post, but I agree with this sentiment. "Pretentious" like "random" is one of the most overused words in the English dictionary. It is never used in the right way.

Lina Lamont was a b**** for sure, but Jean Hagen herself was a wonderfully talented and very pretty actress. I also think it's funny that in the scenes where Kathy (Debbie Reynolds) is dubbing Lina, that it was actually Jean Hagen dubbing herself in her own normal voice.

There was a study done on the IMDB boards a few years ago. "Pretentious" was one of the top 3 or 4 used words on the entire site.

I think that at least one Criterion movies IS pretentious. That film is Fantastic Mr. Fox. I watched it for the second time this month today and could not get that thought out of my head. I like some art films, but what fu<king kid is going to like that movie? It was marketed towards kids, if I remember correctly. It was made solely for hipsters who think "It's funny because it's awkward." Sorry, Wes. This is not the case for the vast majority.
