Where should i really put them. Could i mount one on the ? mark?

Buy some speaker brackets and attach them to the side walls and the ceiling behind you.

lol it's would be hard to hide the wire if he was to mount them there IMO,
just a hint, don't place your rear and surround speaker too close to your sitting. I would say 3 feet away is ideal. Otherwise the surround sound that your ear will pick up will be the sound that bounce off of the front wall.

It is not very dificult to cover the wires by using paintable wire covers or use extremely flat wires that are barely noticable. It is also possible to run the wires inside the walls. If you cannot do it yourself, hire an electrician and they will do a first class job. I realize that they charge money, but some of them charge only around $80 or $90 an hour. It doesn't look like your job will take more than an hour or two. If you have the money, do it and you will be a lot happier in the long run. There are people that spend anywhere from a couple of thousand to several million dollars to make their home theater look first class. Take a look at some of the following sites and see if you can get any ideas.

I agree, putting the speakers on the rear ceiling would sound amazing. The other locations you picked are far too close to the seating position, plus the ceiling position has the potential to look far classier.

Have you thought about making brackets to mount the rears on the railing behind the sofa?

Thanx for the links. I am getting ready to install new speakers and I don't want unsightly wires all over the place. Great post!

First, I would suggest taking away the yellow Sharpie from whoever is drawing in the room.

Next, I would suggest moving the rear surround speakers as close to the back rail as you can. For the sake of your speakers, I would place the rear surrounds on stands that raise them up but not over the height of the rail. Yes, it would sound great if they were mounted on the ceiling over and behind you, but with an open loft space I think short of pre-wiring through the ceiling and walls, it would not look good.

As for the side surrounds, try placing them at the same height as the rear surrounds. If possible, move them further to the sides and forward some.

Ideally, in a surround setup, the speakers all the way around would be an equal distance from the prime listening area. This is very difficult to achieve in real world situations where the room wasn't designed with this in mind.

I forgot what type of reciever you have. Does it have a built-in room optimizer? I think you have an Onkyo, right? If that's the case, you can use the optimizer to help set speaker distances and levels from the prime viewing area. That will help compensate for any surround distance issues. If you want to take it a step further, follow that up with a manual sound meter calibration. Radioshack has a couple of models that work well. That will help you surround system sound sound really immersive.

I still think mounting them on the railing (in a way that wouldn't damage the railing) would be the best bet!!!! Then the others go on either side of the sofa.

Railing would be your best bet, easy and economical and prolly will sound better than the far wall defend on your speaker.

I would charge at least $250 just to fish that wire behind that back drywall. No electrician in the right mind would settle for an 80 bucks.

Those are the weirdest speakers I've ever seen. Mine are all black.
