Funnily enough, though, one particular extended scene in The Wolf of Wall Street that involves two characters high on quaaludes and a telephone line made me think of Harold Lloyd's Safety Last!. There was a distinct physical comedy aspect to that scene that made me think of the Lloyd silent film. It was an outrageously engaging sequence in a similar way.
I loved Safety Last and I think I remember the scene you were referring to! Scorcese used some genius slapstick comedy in this one indeed. I have to say that its also one of his funniest films to date too, and this is why I rank the film so highly.

Oh, I believe you'd really enjoy After Hours like I did! I really hope you get a chance to watch this film soon! I'd look forward to your thoughts on that for sure.

actually you dont have to buy it for the full price. you can get it already for 27$ @ amazon. and thats a pretty decent price for a new criterion (dual format!) bluray.

its not like criterion only needs money income twice a year in these fancy sales. thats why im gonna at least preorder kurosawa and bergman blurays from them to show some support for these directors.

You never know.

Back in the 90s, I took a film appreciation class several times (it was less a class, and more a "let's go see a new movie each week and discuss it" type thing). One of the times I took the class, two of the other folks in it were ladies of an elderly persuasion. One of the films we saw during that class was Pulp Fiction, and both of those women gave it very high marks.

I love the 2002 Hong Kong film, Infernal Affairs, from which The Departed is based, so I was disappointed with the Scorsese film when I rented it upon its DVD release years ago because I kept comparing it to its predecessor. There was nothing wrong with the Scorsese interpretation, per se, but I preferred the simple taut pacing of the Hong Kong movie.

I've been meaning to watch The Departed to appreciate it on its own terms, though.
I haven't seen Internal Affairs, but The Departed with its investigation into familiar Scorsese themes (masculinity, particularly regarding violence and sex; guilt and redemption) fits squarely into his canon. Its additional riff on identity became apparent to me on repeat viewings, and the editing is superlative: the first twenty minutes of this film especially is a masterclass of exposition.

French Cancan is one of the best Technicolor renderings on the blu ray format, and the BFI disc is honestly worth it just for that. Provided you're region-B (or free), of course.

One of my favorite Scorsese films. The camerawork is full of vitality, its genuinely funny, and it's a great late-night-in-NYC venture. And it's one of many, many films that Scorsese has done that dispel the 'gangster/crime director' reputation that he seems to have amongst so many.

It's a lotta fun

True that Scorsese is all over the CC with intros and articles and stuff but we only have one movie of his in the collection we should have more damn greedy studios!

After Hours is awesome! Also think King of Comedy is a lesser talked about one that's great! How about Bringing out the dead or shutter island anyone like those?

Ambien-fueled predictions? Sounds like fun.

The Lady From Shanghai (gotta be someting with mirrors)
GildaY Tu Mama Tambien (a Mad Hatter linked to the film muttering 'I'm late, I'm late, I'm late orrr a character from the film tapping its foot and glaring at its watch)
Fail-Safe/The Fugutive Kind/The Offense/the Hill (maybe not a set but what a set it would be)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (cactus rose clue practically draws itself)
Element of Crime/Dogville (just seems like a good year for more Lars)
Stray Dog, no, Drunken Angel (I can't abandon the film cannister at this late date, it would just be wrong)

These are more like ambien-fueled wishlist entries.

Seven Days in May (great movie, fits with Seconds and I like it a lot)
The Hunger/The Lair of the White Worm (serious dicrector (or auteuers, if you prefer), the types of films that are a pefect fit and I like them a lot)
The Ghost and Mr Chicken (I like it a lot and that's pretty much all I have for that one)

oh yeah, one more
A Val Lewton Cat People Box Set- rights held by Warner make that the longest of longshots but I told BohemianGraham I would buy her one if it ever got released.

Hello all,
I just got on HULU+ and I would really appreciate the input of some serious cinephiles. I've seen just about all the "big" films that are part of the Criterion Collection (plus all that are on BluRay, of course), so I am hoping to find out what are some of the hidden gems I need to stream as soon as possible.

Thank You in advance!

I apologize if some of these have been taken down from hulu as I have not used the service in a time.

I really enjoyed Ken Russell's "Mahler."
"Kapo" by Gillo Pontecorvo is a gem in my book.
"Samurai Rebellion" by Masaki Kobyashi is every bit as intense as Kobyashi's "Harakiri"...

unrelated note, but Tarkovsky's Nostalghia is streaming on Netflix.

Thank You, JHas! I will add look for those four to add to my queue (I also have Netflix). I've heard plenty about Rebellion, but now I finally feel compelled to watch it (anything that can be mentioned in the same breath as Harakiri warrants my attention).

that would be another year with movies that have already a really awesome UK release and could have been released by a other label in the U.S.

UK region-locked releases don't do anything for me. I can't afford a region free blu-ray player.

you cant afford a Region B Sony1100 ?you dont need a region free player. a second region B player with a power converter is enough. you can get that for 60-80$. if you can afford multiple criterion releases im sure you can afford that as well.

and since you dont even have to pay VAT if you are in the U.S you can probably get the movies and player even cheaper.

Hidden Fortress 27.97$

Throne of Blood ~25$

Perhaps, but just because another studio could release a title doesn't mean they are going to.
