I don't think it was a sympathy vote. Tommy Lee Jones was terrific in that movie. It's refreshing actually that a summer blockbuster won an acting Oscar over a Holocaust movie. Speaking of acting Oscars in 1993 that pissed me off, Tom Hanks getting Best Actor for Philadelphia was a travesty. I know he was the heavy favorite heading into that night, but any single one of those other actors nominated would've been a better choice. Hell, Hanks wasn't even the best actor in his own movie. Denzel gave a better performance.

I didn't have a problem with that one first because Basinger was surprisingly good in that role. And second because they had to reward that amazing cast with something. And as the lone acting nominee from L.A. Confidential, it was Basinger or zilch. In fact, that's probably a huge reason why she won.

If I'm not mistaken, Tommy Lee Jones was pretty much a lock to win that year.

Joaquin Phoenix should have won best supporting actor in Gladiator.

The theme song for The Wrestler by Bruce Springsteen should have won best song and it did not even get nominated!! That was a complete tragedy!!

The Adventures of Tin Tin not even being nominated for Best Animated Feature was ridiculous!

Both Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction were more deserving of Best Picture over Forest Gump.

Both Life Is Beautiful and Saving Private Ryan were more deserving of Best Picture over Shakespeare In Love.

Jim Carrey should have at least gotten an Oscar Nomination for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. They could have given him Clint Eastwood's spot, since Eastwood ended up getting the Best Director Oscar the same night.

Should have won IMO...
LA Confidential > Titanic
Pulp Fiction > Forest Gump
Glory > Driving Miss Daisy (wasn't even nominated!)
Clint Eastwood > Al Pacino (Unforgiven vs. Scent of a Woman)
Ian McKellen for LOTR

Thin Red Line for best picture. The fact that Saving Private Ryan got nominated that year also only tacks on the insult. . .

I found The Thin Red Line vastly superior to Saving Private Ryan.

Plus the fact that Malick hasn't won an Oscar makes me very angry.

I still can't get over the fact that The Color Purple did not win a single award.

No way - Malick films cant win oscars. Too damned boring. Saving private Ryan was equally lame though. Bleh to both of them.

As for snubs - Goodfellas not winning because of Dances with Boredom is still a human atrocity.

I'll add Leonardo DiCaprio getting snubbed from a Best Actor Oscar this year (just a guess here).

No way man, this is Chiwetel Ejiofor's year. Leo did amazing and I'd be cool with him wining an Oscar for this performance any other year, but Ejiofor won this with 12 Years. This is a lock if I have ever seen one.

What do mean instead? They were both nominated for best picture and neither won.

Sorry. I mean "also". SPR wasn't even close to being in the same league.
