This discussion of The Velvet Underground myths paints a slightly different picture than today's general perceptions do. A lot of popular bands wrote songs about drugs back then.

Back on Criterion topic, I'm about to head over to Barnes & Noble to pick up Rififi, Thief, and Throne of Blood.

It might be cheaper online. Those three are all in the $29 range online now. It's hard to imagine they'll be that low instore.
There's also some talk in the B2G1 thread of another round of coupons tomorrow.

As usual my hope is for more HITCHCOCK titles!

But would also like:

Red River or other Montgomery Clift film.
A Hard Day's Night - hard to believe Apple would give this up.
Anything by Woody Allen, David Lynch, Orson Welles.

oh, come on.

"Along Comes Mary" was the type of "drug" song that was popular in '66. Not an explicit song like Heroin 'When I put a spike into my vein" etc.

I could be wrong, but now that Criterion had something to say about the film Beach Party (wasn't familiar with it,) isn't that more likely the scene depicted in the cartoon?

I have no idea, but I'll say:

CLÉO FROM 5 TO 7
The 400 Blows
maybe L'avventura

expecting no Kurosawa, no Hitchcock, no Wes Anderson since we just got those.

Wish we would get some more Rock Hudson weepies like Magnificent Obsession, All That Heaven Allows, Written on the Wind, etc. The screen caps of the MoC release of 'The Tarnished Angels' look amazing.

Hirokazu Kore-eda

Uh-oh. Too late. Thanks, though! I did not pay much more than the online price anyway.

Big day at Barnes & Noble for me...

Rififi
Thief
Throne of Blood
Blood Simple
Miami Vice
Film Noir Classics Collection: Volume 4 (DVD)

I've decided to grab the Film Noir Classic Collections on DVD, since I doubt that these will be upgraded to Blu-ray anytime soon, and I have a serious hankering to watch them again (I saw most of these many years ago while I was growing up.). I already had Volume 1. I found Volumes 3 and 5 for $20 apiece online. Volume 2 is scarcely available for cheap these days, so I'm going to keep looking for a cheap price online.

Despite my Coen-bashing a couple of days ago, I think that Blood Simple is a good film of theirs. I haven't seen it in ages, though.

I've wanted to upgrade my old DVD of Michael Mann's Miami Vice for a long time, and Thief day is as good of a day as any other.

* I hope that I'm wrong about the many films in the five DVD sets of the Film Noir Classic Collection not being upgraded to domestic Blu-ray anytime soon, because I'd be thrilled if they were to be announced right now as I'm typing this. With the exception of the French Blu-ray of Gun Crazy, though, I don't see anything indicative of these Warners films being upgraded, at least not all at once.

I recently re-watched Written on the Wind and All that Heaven Allows DVDs, so they will more than likely announce those soon! I want those badly on BLU. They should just do a SIRK box set.

Actually, Apple never gave it up, as they've never controlled the rights to it, Miramax are the current owners. When Walter Shenson, who produced and owned the rights starting in 1979, died in 2000, the Weinsteins bought the rights.

Which explains why Apple has released some other Beatles titles and not that one..or Let it Be (which would be welcome, too).

Only slightly differently. I find it difficult to believe that the minds of Lou Reed and Andy Warhol combined couldn't have had massive pop hits that sold millions if that's all they'd wanted to do. Lou certainly managed it plenty of times in his later career.

Back on topic, Bela Tarr not being in the collection hurts it massively. It's about bloody time.
