I recommend you rewatch a lot of those terrible 90s films. 90s-haters will realize they actually are really different, and in many cases way more enjoyable than when they were first released.

I guess what I'm saying is that a lot of them aged well. And they hold up better now, and they aren't as bad as you remember. Just give them another chance.
I've tried and it's not that they're bad movies. Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, The Faculty etc. are all decent flicks. They just hold no replay value for me at all.

That era even rubbed off on Halloween H2O and Halloween: Resurrection. You can see the Scream footprint all over those movies.

I first saw it when I bought the eight pack with Subspecies, The Faculty, Castle Freak, Dracula 2K, Reflecting Skin (worst movie I have ever seen), The Prophecy, Immortality, and From Dusk Till Dawn (one of the best Rodriguez films, bested only by Planet Terror).

However, there were still some good flicks to come out of that decade. The biggest reason the 90's get such a bad rap in regards to horror is because it spawned the Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer generation. The late 90's took all the campiness and fun out of horror movies, and replaced it with really good looking early twenty somethings in serious whodunnit style thrillers/mysteries. The days of invincible maniac killers hacking victims to shreds, gratuitous female nudity, and porno movie dialogue were over. It was a big change in the direction of the genre from what it was in the 80's and early 90's. I'm not gonna lie, I was on the Scream band wagon at the time, but the movies from that era haven't aged well in my opinion. The replay value just isn't there for me.

A quick sample of the 90's
Dead Alive
Candyman
Night of the Demons 2
Event Horizon
Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight & Bordello of Blood
Night of the Living Dead
Nightbreed
Tales from the Darkside: The Movie
Tremors
Gremlins 2: The New Batch
Frankenhooker
Bride of Re-animator
Children of the Night
The People Under the Stairs
Brainscan
John Carpenter's Vampires
Castle Freak
Species
Tales from the Hood
Bad Moon
From Dusk Till Dawn
Wishmaster

Not to mention the countless Leprechaun, Child's Play, Phantasm, Hellraiser, Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th sequels.
There was also The Dark Half, Lord of Illusions, Wes Craven's New Nightmare, and In the Mouth of Madness.

People tend to exaggerate how inferior the horror films of the 90's were, when in reality, some of them were damn brilliant!

Yep. I'm in the minority, though. Resurrection is miles ahead of H20. Hell, the only reason I own either of them is because the five pack with Prom Night 2 and Curse of Michael Myers was $6.

For me the seventies were the best decade for horror movies, hands down. I may even prefer the sixties over eighties, but that one's a close call.

Subspecies 1-3 is some good 90's Vampire horror as well if you are in the right mood.

The 90's gave the us the first Best Picture (Oscar) winner widely considered to be a horror film, with Silence of the Lambs.

It was not nearly as bad as some horror fans suggest.

And Imo, the 80s was the greatest decade in horror. Everything wasn't quite as self aware and horror was still horrifying and blended sub-genres almost seamlessly.

Speaking of Oscars, today I finally saw American Hustle. And right now, I am watching Chasing Amy, which would have been nominated if they upped it from five to ten a decade earlier than they did.

Go to the Ravenous thread to see it. Be warned, it is the horrendous theatrical poster.

Unlike other people, I really like the new covers for most of SF's releases. It's a shame that they didn't do one for Ravenous.

They said they'll have a different poster on the reverse.
Not newly commissioned, as those are only for Collector's Editions.

This should have been a Collector's Edition.

Oh well, I'm just happy it's finally coming to Blu at least.

Pretty much this.

I could easily rattle off a list containing hundreds of great horror films made in the '70s, however I'd probably struggle to list 30 great horror films from the '90s.

It all comes down to personal taste though.

There's an important distinction, though. The 1970s and 80s are generally considered golden periods for horror, with many innovative and ground-breaking movies that are often considered classics of the genre today. The 1990s... not so much.

IMHO the 1990s was a bleak and boring decade for horror movies, with only a few highlights (and a fair bit of them foreign). In fact, now that I think about it, it is probably my least favorite decade of all regarding horror.

I beg to differ. IMO the 1970s was a much better decade for horror than the 1980s, and the 1960s were definitely on par with the 1980s - if not better. Much of what you saw later would not have come out had it not been for the ground that was broken in the 60s.

I don't know about that. It's true, the stereotypical good-looking twenty-somethings were really taken to a new hight in the 1990s, but I think the tendency was already there in the 80s.

IMO the 1990s have a bad rap because the movies were often rather bland. The first part of the decade was all about the serial killer (after the huge success of Silence of the Lamb). But the movies seemed toned down compared to their counterparts of the 1980s - perhaps in part because there was a big media backlash against horror movies during the 80s. Horror of the 1990s never seemed really "dangerous".

To be fair, I have my share of 1990s horror among my favorites, though. They are titles like In the Mouth of Madness, Jacob's Ladder, Audition, and Ringu.
