Default PS3 playback Issue

I own an 80gig Sony PS3 that was purchased in December 2007. I noticed that with some movie titles that the screen will go black while playing. It usually last for a few seconds and then returns to the normal high def playback. I'm using a normal HDMI connection with a Westinghouse 1080p monitor. My monitor is not set up for auto-source, which plays a console automatically, but I have noticed that when the movie starts to replay the monitor reads HDMI, as if it were just selected to be used.....Any help? on how to take care of this issue?

Thanks in advance

thanks jesterkeeters. I've checked all the connections many times and still there are certain times during playback that the screen will go black. I'm kind of thinking that it might be the monitor, not picking the signal and then when the signal comes back it shows as though it's being plugged in for the first time....thanks

That's an HDMI handshake issue, check the cables too. You might have a bad HDMI cable.

I do not own a Westinghouse TV myself, but I have heard that some of their models have had problems with timing the HDCP handshake, more specifically some of the models takes to long to acknowledge the HDCP request. It was a problem touched upon by some buyers of the PS3 when it was launched. I believe the outcome of the whole situation around Westinghouse TVs was, that it was a problem with the TVs, and not a problem with the HDMI implementation inside the PS3, and Westinghouse was sort of pressured into fixing the faulty TVs for the customers. Since I do not own a Westinghouse TV, or know the age of your TV, or otherwise, that would be my first and probably only guess as to what may be the problem. Hope that at least can explain the bizarre situation.

I own a refurb Westy. HDMI with my TV is questionable at best. It works fine as long as I don't depend on HDMI for audio. When I saw a $97 HTTiB @ Fry's, I jumped on it. No more annoying HDMI audio dropouts.

Now, I occasionally have random sync issues where my player tells me that upconversion isn't possible--limited to 480p. I would suggest you try another cable (Monoprice and Amazon both have good cables for under $10).

Thank you very much everyone who put up their very insightful info. You guys are amazing in your knowledge of this stuff. Does anybody have a suggestion on an HDMI cable to replace the one I'm currently runny. Money is not an issue, but quality is a must.....Thanks

Well thanks for all the great advice. On a whim, last night, I decided to go rent some blu-ray movies at the BlockBuster in South Pasadena, CA. I saw they had the sony ps3 remote so I picked up the tag in order for the cashier to get the product I desired. So I'm up at the register and ask this guy, do you happen to have the HDMI cable for the Sony PS3? He says yes and goes to grab one for me. He also states, while walking to retrieve it that his teacher said that Block Buster is the best buy on the combo pack HDMI and USB cable....So I get the box and it say 54.99....I was amazed since I'd previously seen the combo set for 80 or more dollars.....So if anybody is looking for that set. I suggest you try Block Buster.....they do price matching from store to store and they are basically all across the US.....thanks again everybody for all your help...so far the video issue seems to be completely resolved....
ciao,

Nutty
