I'm not going to continue in the Disney talk as the thread has now been totally derailed which wasn't the intent.

Finally got around to watching Le Cercle Rouge and it was interesting. All of the characters were pretty cool/calm throughout which was surprising. The movie felt like it was dragging in parts, possibly due to the nearly 2 1/2 hour run time but I really enjoyed the
[Show spoiler]heist scene. It wasn't as enthralling as the one in Rififi but not many would be.
.

Just once though, in an older film I'd like to see
[Show spoiler]them actually get away with it. All the great heist movies from the 30's-70's all seem to end the same way, with the main characters getting caught.

I've got an odd work schedule the next few days but I'm hoping to start Army of Shadows soon. I've somehow been on a streak of Lino Ventura films lately. I've also ordered Two Men in Manhattan and can't wait to check that out too.

How is this discussion still happening. Art vs the artist. It was a shocking crime, and a miscarriage of justice that Polanski wasn't arrested, but watching art is in no way condoning the artist's behaviour. Besides, by that logic you'd narrow down what you can see pretty quickly - Sean Penn and Michael Fassbender both have a history of domestic abuse, and there's the story of Woody Allen we all know, and you'd find similar stories if you go all the way back to Fatty Arbuckle.

Oh and as an aside, not meaning to cast light on this discussion but more just reminded me of something I saw this week, this letter from Disney Company - http://www.policymic.com/articles/78...-woman-in-1938

I, too, thought Le Cercle Rouge slightly dragged but it's still a marvel of a movie.

Army of Shadows, on the other hand, is a tightly paced 2 1/2 hours. Simply amazing film, IMO.

I prefer to appreciate works of cinema on their own terms without concerning myself with the tabloid peripherals. I don't have to condone Roman Polanski's personal lifestyle activities to enjoy films that he directed. The cook at the barbecue ribs restaurant on my street probably did some things in his personal, non-work-related life that I do not condone, but I still order the ribs, and the ribs still taste great.

You can also include me in the Polanski love. I own The Ghost Writer, Chinatown, Cul de Sac, Repulsion and Rosemary's Baby as well as The Pianist on DVD. I plan to purchase Tess as well. Thanks to all of those who responded. To those who won't give Polanski a pass, all I can say to them is: "judge the movie, not the man".

I actually have NO problem with people separating the man from the art - But it is possible to watch his films without directly giving him money.

It's also possible to enjoy his films without bragging about how much you don't care about what he did.

I guess if I buy a Polanski film on Criterion, I feel like I'm supporting the Criterion Collection and that is who I feel I'm giving my money to. It's possible to buy his films and imagine you're supporting a video/film distributor too.

I recieved this excellent Polanski book for Christmas. Covers all his films up to Carnage, with high quality stills, behind the scenes photos, and text about the filming. Highly recommended

You buy his films out of charity to Criterion?

Also as an aside, feels like people here are sleeping on The Tenant, though he has a lot of classics so it is easy to see some be overshadowed. But that is one awesome Polanski film.

It might seem like The Tenant gets short shrift but it has a lot of fans here.

People would go batshit if that ever got announced.

As a parent, I wouldn't have let my 13 year old daughter go off with him in the first place, and not more than once.

What? He was arrested. And the real miscarriage of justice was that he agreed to plead guilty under a plea bargain that the judge secretly had no honor of keeping. He would never have plead guilty if he know the judge was crooked and a liar. If you can't trust the judges to honor the laws they bring down on others, then you really can't trust anyone.

I have a lot more problems with his directing "The Fearless Vampire Killers" than for any OTHER misguided errors of judgment he might have made 35 years ago.

On top of that he didn't drug her, she willingly took quaaludes with him. From there on the details are unknown to anyone but the two of them.
Guys definitely a sleazeball but his films are too great to give up.
