I don’t know how rigid the policy change is as it pertains to specialty IMAX 70mm film prints. The Technicolor announcement from just before Christmas certainly didn’t help, see the link below the Youtube clip….https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...st#post8561347

Like I said, David (Mackenzie)…https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...id#post8685615 is one good ![]() As far as rez, this from the horse’s mouth intimately involved in the project…http://www.studiodaily.com/2012/09/f...m-35mm-and-4k/ At the end of the day, the chances of the typical movie-goer getting to see 70mm film is becoming more and more remote as time passes. Given that, if interested in the best presentation possible, when the occasional 4K DCP movie is booked (the last being zee Wolf.. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...lf#post8558447 ), much more practically relevant would be for movie-goers to choose a D-Cinema theater that has something like a Christie 4K projector, or a D-Cinema that *goes the extra mile* by removing the 3D adopter (which lowers the rez)… https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...me#post7546009 . |

![]() I found the Youtube comments from other projectionists funny…http://www.youtube.com/all_comments?v=tZKFFK4x4Fc O.K. then, for the more intellectually serious amongst us, scroll this THR interview clip to exactly the 32min. 55sec. timestamp when these D.P.s (Barry Ackroyd (Captain Phillips), Sean Bobbitt (12 Years a Slave), Bruno Delbonnel (Inside Llewyn Davis), Phedon Papamichael (Nebraska, The Monuments Men) and Stuart Dryburgh (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty) start commenting on the imagery replication (or rather, lack thereof) of current (8 bit Rec.709 1080p) Blu-ray video as compared to how their celluloid shot footage actually appears in a DI suite - http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/vid...terview-656836 |

No, we will mourn a lost era and try to embrace a poor substitute. We might even spot one of those coloured dead pixels that occasionally show up on our bluray when watching a digital transfer. I can hardly contain my excitement.

Riiight. Especially since for the past decade or more the vast majority of films are harvested digitally off the negative right after it's been shot, not to mention the numerous digital post procedures further down the line. Your film prints have been nothing more than digital to analog conversions for years now. Information is lost in that process. Digital projection is closer to the original, and doesn't have gate weave, flicker, (etc) and all the other problems that further degrade the analog film experience.
So saying film prints now are better than digital is like saying FM Radio is better than CD. |

This should tell you how successful Sony's 4k push has been...not very:

Not sure that article's entirely relevant to the uptake of 4K consumer goods, because it's about Sony's movie business (Sony Pictures Entertainment) which has been foundering of late, no matter how many 4K movies they make! Sony loves to present a united front with all of its businesses, but it's all bullshit because as soon as SPE started doing badly, they were on their own. I think Sony even made enquiries about selling SPE recently, and as it is they're making these swingeing cuts.

As a side note, ‘paidgeek’ (also gone from Culver City) used to report directly to Chris. And if Bill leaves, there will be a significant brain drain from the technical trenches. For background, start the vimeo clip covering a panel from the last Cine Gear at about the 19 min. timestamp…http://vimeo.com/70117844 This is also a good time for me to give a BIG tip of the hat to the Hollywood studio Home Entertainment President who, I think, without a doubt, of all the Home Entertainment Presidents (from the Hollywood majors) did the most to promote the Blu-ray format and who will be stepping down from his watch in March. I’m talking about David Bishop ![]() He will be missed. Last edited by Penton-Man; 01-23-2014 at 05:13 PM. Reason: typo |
