Check out this spring lineup at Midtown Art Cinema here in Atlanta...

Tue, Mar 18: The 400 Blows (1959), directed by François Truffaut. 35mm print!
Tue, Mar 25: Solaris (1972), directed by Andrei Tarkovsky.
Tue, Apr 1: 8 1/2 (1963), directed by Federico Fellini. New digital restoration!

Tue, Apr 29: Au Revoir les Enfants (1987), directed by Louis Malle. 35mm print!

I know where I'm going to be on March 4. That much is certain.

It's a hassle to drive into the city on weeknights, but I might make it out to Breathless and Solaris as well.

That's awesome!

I would LOVE to see those all on the big screen, especially Au Revoir Les Enfants.

I just purchased my ticket for Seven Samurai, and emailed a few of my offline friends about the event. I'm not missing a chance to see this on the big screen for a 35mm showing.

You can't forget 8 1/2. Fellini on the big screen is incredible.

I thought of the "Criterion Treatment" when I read this paragraph from Richard Brody's "Don't Worry About the End of Film"

Quote:
The virtue of film is its imperfection. A print of a film is a living thing—it’s different each time it’s projected, thanks to new scratches and new splices, dust and hair and wear and tear. Its age shows, just as the age of a 78-r.p.m. record does, just as the age of a book from a library does. Through use, a film degrades and bears the traces of its popularity. That’s why restorations of classic films, while offering the pleasure of visual clarity, often feel denatured, as if the original virginity of an unscreened print represented a filmmaker’s intentions. A print that goes into the world takes its lumps; some state between the immaculate and utter ruin is an accurate representation of the experience that moviegoers had in the age of film projection. (That’s why some inexpensive, off-label DVDs featuring unretouched transfers of prints peculiarly and, incidentally, conjure the sense of a theatrical screening better than some high-quality restorations.)

Do you want to send them an email about that? Last time I asked when my order is shipped, they cancelled it.

Barnes & Noble B&N Next Sale Date?

I hate to ask a question that you guys probably get annoyed of every time you see it, but...

Do you guys know when the next Barnes & Noble Criterion sale is?

My Criterion shelf pretty weak at the moment as I've just started getting a bit more serious with collecting them (Only four! ) and I've been making a list of films I'd like to purchase and start saving up for. It'd be nice to know a deadline for how much money I'd need to earn. Thanks a bunch!

June/July, if I remember correctly.

Off topic, but I thought I'd mention this. If any of you have a BJ's Wholesale Club membership, you might want to check out the movie section of your local store(s). I was in mine this afternoon and saw a handful of Warner Bros. DVD sets at $14.99 a piece. The ones I noticed included: The Val Lewton Horror Collection, The Warner Bros. Gangster Collection Vol. 2 & Vol. 3, The James Cagney Signature Collection, and The Ronald Reagan Signature Collection.

The Lewton is an especially good deal: 9 terrific movies on 5 discs. Breaks down to about $1.50 per film.

That Val Lewton DVD set is one of my prized possessions. Those are some of the greatest horror films ever made. In fact, this Val Lewton set was my introduction to the brilliance of Jacques Tourneur, and it led me to purchase Night of the Demon/Curse of the Demon and Out of the Past, which now graces my avatar.

I know that I've harped on this a lot, but the Warner Film Noir Classic Collection box sets would be great buys if they are available during the above sale. I recently replaced my old Film Noir Classic Collection: Volume 1 set that was destroyed in a flood in 2009, and I also went back and found cheap copies of Volumes 2-5 from third-party Amazon sellers. I just finished watching Fritz Lang's Clash By Night from the Volume 2 set.

The old Warner Bros gangster films are perfect. We are fortunate to have Little Caesar and Public Enemy on Blu-ray now. There are so many more that need to be upgraded someday, though.

We have Sam's Clubs around here, same as Costco/BJ's in essence; I need to stop in there tomorrow to get a few things and I've always enjoyed checking out their boxed sets. They have your standard new releases but the DVD sets are where you strike gold. Last time I picked something up there, they had the FANTASTIC Peter Lorre Mr Moto sets for around $13 each.

Especially now that Warner since banished most of the boxset (except for Curse of the Cat People?) to the MOD Archive, it's your last chance to get the Classy Serious First-Dip Version. And it is that.
If they still have the original at BJ's, you've struck buried gold.

That's the primary reason I posted about them being at BJ's. I wondered if the Lewton's were now being MOD'ed. Because I already have the DVD set (as well as the Image/Turner LD set), it's only a matter of curiosity for me, but I keep forgetting to look whenever I'm at the Warner Archive Collection site.

I do need to go back to BJ's to pick up the Gangsters Vol. 3 after next paycheck. I have all the others (Gangsters Vol. 2 I have as The Warner Bros. Tough Guys Collection).

It's been a while since I saw Warner boxed sets at Sams. Costco puts them out at least a couple of times a year.
