Yeah, the aux cords suck because you have to jockey around the volume on both the deck and the iPod to get it to where you're not getting distortion. That's the main reason i got an iPod over another brand of mp3 player, because aftermarket radio support is all for iPod. The connectors you can get to hook the radio up to the iPod via its dock connector gives you much better sound quality (CD quality if the stuff on your iPod is CD quality). I never carry the iPod around with me, but I can't live without it in the car. One of the things I wonder how I ever did without.

if you listen to the original cd and ripped mp3, side by side, you will know why. the most obvious is the high freq range is all cut.
even the quality of the cd is quite restricted, and you compress it some more.
mp3(inc itune, wma, ...) is good for pirating, size smaller, easy to 'share'.

The audio sucks, try playing mp3s in a good audio system, sound like garbage.

Also, they are ruining the music industry. I'm a collector and love buying Cds... but looks like i'm in the minority now. I will be pissed if anymore music stores in my area close down.

Yeah,.. I don't hate MP3 but I don't like them and I agree with the ruining the music industry part.

Give people cheap low quality media and they gobble it up then suddenly you have WalMart demanding that in order for them to stock CD's in the store Digital versions on MP3 have to be available on the website.

I think Cd's are losing to Mp3.

AND... Lots of shareing goes on. If someone comes over with an ipod with 80GB of music files (hundreds or thousands of CD's)... why not just dump it to your hard drive and presto you've got a lifetime of music instantly.

I'm glad I have many of the CD's I will want because I think Cd is losing to Mp3 and because of that I'm very concerned that high quality video can lose to youtube and iphone quality video files.

Default My $0.02 on these subjects:

MP3s suck Period. Anyone with even decent speakers can tell the difference.

One thing that has not been mentioned here is ear training. I think a lot of people don't really "Listen" to music. Most just listen to lyrics. You can enjoy music far more(Blus too) if you really learn to listen. It sounds rediculous, but its very true.

Learn to listen, focus more on what you are hearing and less on what the songs "meaning" is for a while and you'll hear things you've never heard in the music before. you'll also instantly hate the next MP3 you play.

As for Lion, no offense, but you really need to go to a audio shop or something, anything non-BB/CC/etc. and listen to a properly setup 5.1/7.1 system and you'll understand. Honestly IMHO it sounds like you have something against audio for no aparent reason. it could also be that you just don't have the ears for it. some people just don't hear as well as others...not much can be done about that.

Yes ! Saw them on the Piece of Mind Tour 1983 ! Now, on topic. The sound of MP3 is a compressed sound! Good for on the go but NEVER good to sit back and really HEAR what the artist intended ! I would recomend you check out a local high end audio/video shop in your area. Bring in some Blu Rays and some cds and listen for yourself. For me it is like going to Six Flags and getting of a roller coaster............but BETTER

When we first got our iPod, i ripped all our CDs (about 100 or so of them) using mp3 320kbs. It only took up 1/10th of the iPod's hard drive, so I looked in to what I should have done. WAV 44,100khz? Apple Lossless? AAC? MPEG4? MP3? I had no idea what to do as I didnt want to start ripping all in WAV and run out of space before I finished. Anyway, it turned out Apple Lossless was the way to go, as it was half the size of WAV 44,100KHz, but sound quality was no different. I have done most of our CDs, but have run out of computer Hard Drive space (not iPod hard drive space), I will complete the job when I have my new Macbook Pro, and I can't get some of my video files off my external hard drive. But soon, all of them will be in Apple Lossless, and it sounds brilliant! Then I just need a Numark iDJ2! If I had an iPod Nano, I wouldn't use Apple Lossless. Only do it with a iPod Classic 80GB or higher if you have a lot of CDs. Otherwise maybe a high bit rate MP4
