Some of those scenes looked pretty bad, on a large screen. Russell Cherrington even said it was like overcopied porn VHS. So Shout would have to do a lot of major wor to upgrade the video.

Some new news. Apparently Scream Factory's release will not be The Cabal Cut, but a new Director's cut from Clive Barker using a mix of theatrical and Cabal Cut footage.

If I read that correctly, they're taking the Cabal Cut and just cleaning it up, trimming away the fat.

I read that Barker's original first cut was ~150 minutes. The Cabal Cut is ~160 minutes, so that's already 10 minutes of cutting room floor footage that was put back in. So, chop it back out, clean it up and restore Clive Barker's original vision.

That's what I'm getting from this announcement.

Also, I highly doubt that they won't include all the excised footage as Deleted/Extended Scenes on the eventual release.

The negatives I've heard about the cabal cut are all about how it's to long. Good editing goes along way. As long as Barker is the one making the decisions I'm ok with it.

Why this can't have seamless branching to show us the entire thing is beyond me; it doesn't have to be the 'main feature' if the cut drags.

whats more disturbing is this quote

Quote:
"More importantly, the VHS footage will be put through a high-definition digitization process to make certain that this is the best version of Nightbreed possible."
if it's truly is coming from VHS tapes I'm not interested

I can't wait until this is officially released and there are pages and pages on this thread complaining about how the release is not perfect in some way.

Most of the footage they could find was only on VHS tapes so that is the only source they have to work with.

They have a lot of work to do, my question are:
- are they going to release the Theatrical Cut as well?
- Will the Director's Cut be SD only?
- Will Shout! talk with Clive & MGM to bring lord Of Illusions to Blu!

I believe the plan is to release the directors cut only. So it will be hd and no theatrical.

Lord of illusions would be great

This will be from a VHS source? What's the point of a Blu-Ray then?

I actually feel a lot better about this being a new "Director's Cut" than it being the "Cabal Cut" -- Clive Barker is now involved with it, which is exactly how it should be, and he is the only one who should decide what should stay and what should go and how it should flow.

Otherwise, we will end up with something like "Superman II: The Donnor Cut," which is actually misleading, because, although it used a lot of cut footage from Richard Donnor's intended film and was cut in an attempt to preserve what Donnor would have liked to have done, it was not actually put together by Donnor himself --- Some other guy (whose name escapes me) edited it and basically re-directed the film how he thought Donnor would have done it. In the end, it's not a "Donnor Cut" at all -- it's a glorified Fan-Cut, which is exactly what the "Cabal Cut" is.

Warner won't give them the theatrical cut, so no.
It will not be SD only, which is why they are trying to clear up the VHS footage through HD transfers.
Perhaps a new MGM deal will surface someday.

This could be transferred from stone tablets found next to the dead sea scrolls then recorded to betamax and ran on a 1950 westinghouse black and white television.I don't care. I want to see it.

I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure that Donner was involved in that release.

Warner actually owns the Theatrical Version. The Shout! release of this new cut is an entirely new film altogether. Be nice though if they release a Blu of that cut through the Archive to tie-in with the Scream release.

What I like to know if they'll restore the 20th Century Fox logo (as it was the film's original distributor)
