I was trying to say that reading into something too much is never a good thing. And also because of this:

The post-structuralists would say no - each movie holds an indefinite amount of possible readings. And the director's is just one out of many.

The thing is, that even though a movie of course is a conscious product of certain creative minds, it is also a product of it's time and culture. The technology, the aesthetic trends, the way people talk about things and what they talk about, industry regulations, what kind of stories are popular and how are the told etc. etc. is radically different when you, say, compare a movie from the 1930s to one from the 1970s, or one from the 1970s to a new one. All these elements have some influence on the finished product.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre would have been unthinkable just a decade before because the technology to make it did not exist and censorship rules were quiet different etc. etc. So yes, one way to see it is as a straight-forward tale of terror about some random young kids who have a very bad day, or even as a dark comedy (as Hooper, Kim Henkel, and Daniel Pearl have all described it).

But on another level, TCM is very much a product of its time and place and says something about the cultural anxieties of that specific period - about the destruction of the nuclear family, about the hippie generation's loss of innocence, about the perception of the American South, and about "America without gas" - a country at that time in dire economic (and oil) crisis, disillusioned by war and the lack of believable authority figures.

I'll hop on that, you may be right, you seem to like hardcore as I do as well. We probably got a lot of the same tastes.

Has Scream/Shout done any deals with Sony? I ask, because I was wondering if the [Rec] series would be a good candidate? I've always wanted to see this, and I'm surprised(I guess I shouldn't be as it's Sony), that the US doesn't have any of the 3(soon to be 4) films on BD.
I saw Quarantine and thought it was okay. I understand these films are much better though.

Sony doesn't let anyone do new extras so that's why Shout won't release anything by them.

Which, IMO, is kind of a stupid reason. Shout releases stuff all the time that lacks in extras. I'd rather they release a barebones version at a decent price of say, John Carpenter's Vampires, then Sony give that to Twilight Time and have them charge a lot more.

Or even just get films that already have Special Editions out like Candyman.

Why barebones? Sure, Sony won't let people produce new extras, but extras already exist for "John Carpenter's Vampires" (Commentary) and "Candyman" (Commentary, featurettes, ect.). I don't see why Sony would deny people use of extras they have already produced for themselves? But, who really knows..

That's not entirely true. Sony let Grindhouse Releasing release fully loaded Blu-Rays of Corruption and The Big Gundown. The same will probably be true of The Swimmer.

Not at all. They are part of Warner and Warner almost never sublicences. Badlands is the only known example.

Good to know there's always a chance...no matter how small.
Just thought [Rec] would make a nice addition to Scream's lineup, especially since it would be the only US BD release.

Why the Hell does Terror Train look so bad on BD? I mean, The transfer looks great but they left tons of scratches and hairs in the print! Why????
Most Scream Factory films are cleaned up excellent!

Sooo... Let's observe hints we have for upcoming titles once again.
-One more Clive Barker project (believed to be either Candyman 2, Rawhead Rex (least likely), or Lord of Illusions)
-Two titles from unknown deal, or one unknown and one Arkoff
-Six titles from larger unknown deal (MGM, Fox (probably not as 1st title was announced prior to announcement of deal being in works), Code Red, or Universal)

Would love for an MGM or Code Red deal!

I'd be surprised if there was a third Arkoff title. Everything of note from 1956 - 1980 probably belongs to either Susan Hart or MGM.

The interview in question was posted on 12/23/2013, within two weeks after Phantom of the Paradise (12/12/2013), Evilspeak (12/13/2013) and Final Exam (also 12/13/2013) were announced, but it's not clear when the interview actually took place. I have a feeling the interview may have taken place just prior to those announcements. Transcription takes time and the interviewer's biography indicates that he's a fairly busy indiviual. The deals in question may very well be as follows:

Code Red: Evilspeak, Final Exam
Samuel Z. Arkoff estate: Hellhole, The Final Terror
Fox: Phantom of the Paradise, Ravenous, Lake Placid and three as yet unannounced titles
