Warner Bros Alexander: The Ultimate Cut (2004)

Alexander Blu-ray 2-disc

Alexander Blu-ray

Can someone please explain to me what this movie is doing with yet another version? An ultimate cut? Really? I have the previous version as last of a 3 pack with Troy and 300. Unless the changes are substantial and everyone is saying this new version is the one you must have if you have one version, than I will probable keep what I have. Does anyone know any more about this new version?

So we now have a 4th cut of the film and it will include theatrical as well. woohoo!

Theatrical, Director's Cut, Revisited: Final Cut, and Ultimate Cut

Is the Director's Cut available on Blu-ray in any other country? I'd love to have all 4 cuts.

This seems to be getting the full Blade Runner treatment, only I don't think anyone's claimed that the new cuts turn it into a classic of any sort. :P

I suppose it must be popular, though?

Wasn’t the third cut called “the final cut”?

It was called the final cut. [Laughs] This is the ultimate cut. I came up with a better one. What’s beyond ultimate? Nothing. This is it. This is it. I don’t have any more for you. Come on, I went back for nothing and did it again.

. . .

Alexander was the story of a man who set out to — who did explore to the end of the world, conquered, too, and never lost a military battle; tremendous man, interesting, also an educator. He never went back. He never looted the places and went back to Macedon or Greece like most of the conquerors did. He actually tried to integrate that which he conquered with what he knew. He intermarried his armies, his generals, the culture. Of course he pissed off a lot of people doing so. In other words, he was integrating the world, which is a wonderful idea, and I think leads to peace. And he was a peacekeeper in the end. In fact, his battles were very economical in terms of what he lost. He preserved life. He really was a peacekeeper, in my opinion. That’s why I made the movie. And the fourth version you have to see, please. Its only three hours and 26 minutes, but you must see it. It’s one of my best films.

Stone just can't make up his mind on this title. He's got to be the worst director for changes outside of Lucas and Mann. About the only thing good about it is a naked Rosario Dawson, but that's not worth the money IMHO when Trance is a better film.

I'm not sure it's fair to compare him to George Lucas. He's not going in and adding things to the film that were never there and then trying to pass it off as the original.

I kind of like the fact that Alexander has turned into this Fantasia-esque film that changes every few years, but doesn't ignore the fact that each new version is an alternate, rather than the "only-version-that-should-ever-have-existed-because-this-is-the-way-I-always-envisioned-it" that Lucas tries to pull off.

Stone knows his film is flawed, but it's clear that he's passionate about it, so he revisits it often and in doing so, does what he can to improve the film, each version with it's own subtitle, clearly differentiating them so that people know it is not the way the film was originally exhibited.

I'll definitely pick this up when the price drops a bit, because in my opinion, the theatrical version has always been the best cut, but also because I'm really interested in seeing the changes he has decided on for this particular version.

Somebody PLEASE add a link to the Family Guy Episode "Padre de Familia" it's a 7-9 second clip where Oliver Stone is in the Quahog Veterans Day Parade. Tom Tucker's comments on OS are HILARIOUS & fits into what a lot of people are thinking. I don't know how to, or it would be on here already.

I don't think the video is online anywhere but here's the hilarious quote:

"And here comes whackadoo film director Oliver Stone. Oliver's here promoting his new movie Born on the Fourth of July II: Born on the Fifth of July, which he promises will be even "July-ier" than the original. A dangerously insane human being."

For those who are dissatisfied with another cut, have you never changed something? Renovated a kitchen or bathroom? Modified a car? For 11 years now, I've been modifying one of my cars, sometimes better, sometimes not. Or something that most people on here can relate to, their home theatre.

If you didn't like the previous cuts why bother commenting on a 4th?

I've been fascinated by this film from before its release, and I'm excited to see the new cut and have the theatrical cut on Blu-ray. I kind of hope he keeps making new ones too, lol. Because that's so Oliver Stone's Alexander.
