Almost missed that last option.

With the lack of games from November 15th until right now, I see it as a good thing. Slowly get the PS4 working 100% in all areas including pick up & play options is smart. It feels like it's taking longer this gen as opposed to last but I could be mistaken there.

#1 priority at this moment is future proof PS4. Work out the bugs, bring back promised features & then focus heavy on rolling out games.... Success.

I don't think I will get a PS4 before they make a model with more HDD space.

You know you could pop in a 1TB HDD in about 5 mins right?

People have problems with Sony providing more space at additional cost. People don't have problems with shelling out $80-$120 for a new drive.

True, but the cost of that console was also $600 which was very expensive and even today people say that a $500 console is too much (which is why some go after the XB1 wanting an extra hundred bucks).

But 8 years ago, $600 was a lot more money--comparatively speaking--than it is now.

However the difference in video & sound quality from PS2 to PS3, addition of blu ray player, media center capabilities etc helped to justify the extra cost.

The PS4 doesn't have the 'value' that the PS3 did when you compare the two. The PS2 could not do what the PS3 could, whereas now we have the opposite...the PS3 can do what the PS4 cannot--until it gets patched back in

Yes, the PS4 is faster and has more potential but right now it is not being fully realized.

As far as backwards compatibility goes, I believe only the PS2 was truly backwards compatible (not including current and recent nintendo consoles).
Video game consoles before the PS2 did not have backwards compatibility.
I completely understand the argument of physical space though. My TV only has 4 HDMI inputs and all are now in use. But then again I didn't buy a PS4 to play PS3 games.
No, there was little if any backwards compatibility with older consoles--but they were cartridge based systems and new cartridges were made to take advantage of advancements. With DVD/Blu Ray based systems, what used to be then due to format limitations doesn't really justify what is possible now. Even Nintendo was able to make the Wii U play Wii games despite using a different format of discs. Does it play Wii games as seamlessly as the Wii U games? No, it's a bit clunkier and puts you into an emulation mode, but honestly that is OK.

Quote:
From the business point of view though, it makes perfect sense. There will be more people who will buy the PS4 at a lower price than there are people willing to pay more for BC. And for people who don't want to upgrade right now, for that reason, just means that they are not yet done with the PS3 and will continue to support it's revenue. 10 year plan! lol
See, I'm not sure that's true--at least not now. The PS4 would be $400 if it was backwards compatible or not. Not to mention, that it would be a huge selling point. They both use blu ray discs as it is right now, so there is no format issues to contend with. Yes, the PS3 and PS4 hardware is different enough that emulation would be required but emulation is not unacceptable, and it gives the system new life by getting people using it more.

Sure, the profit margin on the PS3 is no doubt much higher than the PS4, which seems to me why they are not putting BC as an important factor more than anything. Still, the ability to play my PS3 games on the PS4 would motivate me to buy one despite the lack of other features that haven't been patched in yet.

And this applies to the XB1 as well. Being "new" doesn't movitate me to buy a new console, there has to be a long term benefit to it.

Best example I can think of right now is the Blu Ray player, if it did not have backwards capability to play DVD's as well it would have taken a LOT longer to be adopted and popular, format war with HD DVD aside of course (which slowed adoption if anything).

All psychological. People won't pay $15 per month extra for HBO because it's a single channel, but bundle it in with a bunch of other crap they'll never ever watch and they'll gladly pay $35 a month for it.

LOL! This made me laugh. Inflation hasn't gone up THAT much in the last 8 years. You make it sound like it was the 1950's or something.

I'm waiting for an exclusive I have to play. I'm a PC gamer first, and I've got a huge Steam backlog to occupy my gaming hours, so I'm in no rush.

$600 in 2005 is like $715.69 in 2013.

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics

http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc....005&year2=2013

No, it's not that long and $100 isn't that much but it all makes a difference.

Putting it in perspecitve using the same years and dollars, how about $478 for a PS4?

Gas was around $2.00 per gallon and climbing and the Discovery channel had a TV show predicting the end of civilization as we know as the fictional show was predicting it might rise to $4.00 per gallon.

Point being, inflation still happens every year and $600 then is not the same as $600 now and it won't be the same as 8 years from now.

I voted for 3 items; 2 games related and the other being money.

I know I'll want a PS4 at some later date, but none of the games available today are hold any interest to me. With loads of unstarted 5th-7th gen games on my shelf, I'm in no hurry.

None of the above.

Waiting for MGS: The Phantom Pain. Then, and only then, will my beloved PS3 be truly obsolete.

Fallout 4 would compel me to buy a PS4. That or maybe a sequel to Red Dead Redemption.

Fallout 4 would compel me buy whatever it is an exclusive on.

It would also motivate me to decide which way I would go next-gen before its release, because it is a release purchase for me no matter what.
