I'm glad I didn't start a new thread. I saw info mentioned at The Digital Bits and was surprised I hadn't seen the info posted here. Did a quick search and didn't find anything but decided I'd better just check a couple of the sections manually and found this thread.
Anyway, seemed like a BD-Live player that could bitstream the advanced audio codecs and costs only $349 would be a big deal so I guess it's appropriate the this thread is pretty long already. ![]() |

I owned PS3 for a Player since December 2006 but when found out was not capable of HD AUDIO {Dolby TruHD, Dolby Digital Plus, And the Master DTS HD Master Audio} is was ticked off. So figured out waiting for a reasonable price either 399 or under. Today I was in Best buy and asked if any new Blu Ray Players were in stated just got new samsung BD P1500. Looked to see if it had all the Stamps of approval DTS HD Dolby Digital Plus and TRU HD all were on top of player. When got home hooked up to Onkyo 805 Put in Multiple movies From Warner to Sony To Disney all Audio Codecs lit up my Reciever. Even the DTS High Resolution not to impressed with that codec. The experience from PS3 decoding DOLBY TRU HD and DTS HD was ok but this player plays 45% better. My reciever starts at 0 and goes up to 99. PS3 had to start at 57 before start hearing it. But This player I can her it @ 34 and it's more fuller and discrete with all Hi Fi sound. But picture was brighter than PS3 hands down and about the same speed maybe a tad slower sometime but overall great. Blu Ray is about High Def Picture and Sound. And I think were the ethernet Plug on the back is you can probably hook a usb wireless adapter for BD Live Titiles can't confirm that till later. If you come cross this player pick it up to experience the ALL FULL HD can't be happier for under $425 BD 2.0 profile Player.

I purchased my 1500 today at BB and have spent a few hours watching movies. I also have a 1200 and 1400 so can really compare the three. The load times are great, much better then the other two. I watched untraceable via bitstreat in dolby true hd.
A couple of things I have noticed. First, i get multiple handshakes when loading a disk. I dont have the problem with either the 1200 or 1400. The other, more irritating problem is that I cannot find the remote sensor. I have a RCI remote and need to find the sensor to setup my remote. It was easy to find on the 1200 and 1400, not so here. The manual says to the right of the open/close but I have tried every spot there and nothing. Another issue is that I tried to play 2 BD RE disks wih no luck. Neither copy of untraceable worked in the 1400 ro 1500. The backup of First Sunday worked in the 1400, not in the 1500. Any input from those of you who have a 1500 would be appreciated. Can anyone put some SD DVDs through the paces and report back on the 1500's upconverting capabilities. I have the BD30 right now but SD stuff doesn't look too great. I'm hoping the Samsung's processing is better (not sure what chip they are using in this model)

Bitstream DTS HDMA and Dolby THD: yes
480i resolution via HDMI: no (can do 480i over component ![]() Upconversion about the same as I have seen from the BD30, S300, LG BH200= average. When having the 8.8 do the upconversion via the Reon, there is a noticeable difference. Load times are on par with what has already been mentioned. Pretty strong. No resume play. 2 channel analog out. No handshake issues with the 8.8. a-b comparison with the LG BH200 PQ wise is almost identical for BR. Last edited by Woody; 05-15-2008 at 02:27 PM. |

I watched a Battlestar Galactica episode last night (SD DVD) and I thought it looked great. From my viewing distance (around 15' for a 42" TV), it would be hard to tell SD and HD (1080i) apart. I mean, I could, but I'd have to be looking for it. But to put this into perspective, I think SD looks reasonably good on this set. I can certainly see the difference, and up close you can see it looks a bit of a mess, but once you get back on the couch, it's perfectly acceptable. I haven't seen any Blu-Ray in action yet, so I can't compare SD DVD to Blu-Ray. |

I simply tested it by hitting stop, and then play again. Tried it on 300, and on Castaway. Resume didnt work in either instance.

Absolutely, it has resume play. I just tried again with Harry Potter 1, stopping playback after five minutes or so, then completely powering down my system with my Harmony RC. I waited 20 minutes or so while I took a shower, went back and powered the system on, and playback resumed right where I left off, five minutes or so into the movie.

Another observation: the first time you hit stop and the Samsung screen comes up, look at the "Stop" logo in the upper left corner. You should see a triangle and a square (where triangle means "play" and square means "stop"). That likely means you can resume from that point. Hit stop again and the logo changes to just the square, no triangle, and your resume play point is erased.

And if anyone's interested, here's my mini-review of first impressions:
Snagged one at Walmart yesterday out of curiosity. They have a 90-day return policy, so I'm really going to put this player through its paces. So far, so good. It's pretty good, actually. Load times are decent, falling somewhere between the PS3 and the Panasonic BD50, and it's pretty quick with chapter skipping. It doesn't have all the HDMI handshake issues that I've had with the PS3, and it seems to have a hair sharper picture than the PS3, but that's very subjective. I'll need to check out more discs to be sure of that. Another plus over the PS3: it's quiet, no distracting fan noise. The player decodes DTHD internally and bitstreams DTHD and DTS-HD MA to my Denon receiver. Unlike the Panasonic BD50, I have not yet heard a dropout with DTHD while bitstreaming. The player is BD-Live-Ready, unlike the Panny, and has an ethernet port on the back. Supposedly, a future firmware upgrade will make it truly BD-Live. It also has a USB port, which the manual says is for firmware updates only. I was hoping it was for additional storage. The unit itself is pretty small, as compared to previous models, with a very clean and unclutered front panel. "She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kid." Remote is the same as previous Samsung models. Basic set up menus for video, audio, etc. Nothing too fancy, nothing too tweakable. All in all, I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised. I have yet to watch a movie all the way through, so it remains to be seen whether freezes or glitches are a problem. I'm hopeful that is not the case. Price was $348. Considering that the upcoming BD-Live Panny is $699 and the two upcoming 1.1 Pioneers are $599 and $799, it's a steal. (Of course, those players decode both DTHD and DTS-HD MA internally, which is necessary for people who don't have HDMI 1.3 receivers.) But is it a keeper? |

I agree, the only thing I don't like is the inability to output 480i over HDMI, but if the player de-interlaces properly, it is not a big deal. I will have to check that when I have time. Bitstream, ethernet for FW and decent load times for $348. Can't beat it. When the new Pio players come it will probably be relegated to the bedroom, but for now I am very pleased. |
