Tonight we watched Life Of Pi...
Wow... Just wow... ![]() The 3-D added so much to the experience and the pop outs were used to great effect. There were times in rainy scenes where the 3-D made you feel like you were there getting rained on. I was expecting water to run off of my glasses onto my nose. ![]() Colours, sound... pretty much everything is amazing. The film is a work of art and a technical triumph. Tomorrow we plan to watch Avatar. My exposure to this movie was previously on 2-D DVD on our old 50" TV. |

Ended up liking it a lot more than I thought I would after seeing those blah trailers--which didn't motivate me to go see it. The character development worked out in the end with a rather safe story. Glad to have in my 3D library since I bought it during BB's holiday sale. Tried streaming Sammy, but it stuttered bad on the Vizio Netflix App. It may have been my connection because of a recent storm though. Also watched/watching recently: IMAX Under the Sea - really nice pop out as have been mentioned. Percy Jackson Sea of Monsters - eh, still trying to finish. 3D doesn't seem worth it. The stained glass scene in the beginning was good in 3D though. Maybe it gets better. Or not. Oz The Great and Powerful - view for the 3D. Acting borders on hammy. It'll be a while before I watch this again. I liked the monkey best. Last edited by Udon BeLaze; 02-18-2014 at 06:58 PM. Reason: added another title |

![]() [Show spoiler] Even though the story is probably for a 8 year old, what I really liked about Sammy's Tale part 1 is for most part of the film, the turtles seem to be swimming outside the screen .... And the snake scene is an extremely good use of 3D. Watch it for the effects, not for the movie. ![]() |

Well, Avatar seems to have been pushed back a day.
We watched Hugo 3-D last night. I was very impressed with the movie. Less "pop outs" than Life Of Pi but the 3-D was consistent and strong and added a lot of dimension to the movie. I loved how dust, stars, rain, etc were all utilized to draw you into the environment. I thought the story, direction, acting etc were all excellent and it is at least a 4 star film. I can see rewatching this again and again in the future. Looking up the movie I was sad to see that it was somewhat of an overlooked film and actually lost money. This movie deserved/deserves a far better fate. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_(film) In my opinion this is a "must own" 3-D title. This and Life of Pi are two of the movies I have watched recently that are excellent movies and would be critically acclaimed even if they were not in 3-D. The fact that they offer some of the best 3-D just makes them that much more strongly recommended. I suspect Avatar is going to get a similar reaction from me which will make 3 "must own" titles in my opinion. Planning on getting Gravity when it comes out. I wonder if I will feel this strongly about that movie as well? |

Last night was Avatar night. It had been long enough that I was able to watch the movie with fairly fresh eyes; yet the difference between my previous 2-D experience and this 3-D experience were like night and day. Great use of popups and the depth of this one is right up there with the "in your face" Man In The Dark.
The colours and clarity and the engrossing environments just draw you into the world and help with suspension of disbelief. While the story can be a bit preachy it is like a modern day western in a sense with a strong sense of morals and lessons the story wants to send. My father is in his late 60s and he was totally engrossed in the movie and thought it was amazing. So... For sure 3-D titles for people that want great 3-D experiences and a great movie that may likely be remembered as classics or hidden gems in decades to come: -Avatar -Life Of Pi -Hugo Pacific Rim has incredible 3-D but it is a bit like a Transformers movie and as such has some of the limitations of that sort of movie. Man In The Dark has a super restoration and has the interesting history of being the first 3-D movie by a "major studio". These 5 are all highly recommended by me but the latter two come with the caveat that they may not be as universally enjoyed by yourself or your guests as the first three. I have not watched my copy of Titanic 3-D yet. That may well get my same recommendation as the other movies. |

Just watched Man Of Steel last night. The little things like the little particulets floating in the air and the general depth of the movie I thought was amazing. And the sound is A1 as far as LFE is concerned.
