There almost wasn't. When MGM bought the rights to the remake, they had a clause in the contract that demanded all existing prints of the original be destroyed. Fortunately, the film's director, Thorold Dickinson, kept a secret print of the film, which is what was used for the BFI release.

I put together a list of neo-noir titles from IMDB with user rating of 7.4 or higher, excluding those with minimal votes and "transition" titles like Cape Fear (1962). You can see the IMDB list here: http://www.imdb.com/keyword/neo-noir...e_type=feature

The total number is 95, and 79 are available on Region A BD. The average rating of the 79 is 7.9 and the average year is 1993. For the 16 not on BD, the average rating is 7.6 and the average year is 1987. So older, less popular titles tend not to be on BD - makes sense. Still, I was surprised at what I saw when looking at individual titles not on BD.

Mulholland Drive 2004 David Lynch 8.0
Barton Fink 1991 Coen Br. 7.8
25th Hour 2002 Spike Lee 7.8
Friends of Eddie Coyle 1973 Peter Yates 7.7
The Long Goodbye 1973 Robert Altman 7.7
Prince of the City 1981 Sidney Lumet 7.7
Lost Highway 1997 David Lynch 7.7
Munich 2005 Steven Spielberg 7.7
Charley Varrick 1973 Don Siegel 7.6
A Simple Plan 1998 Sam Rami 7.6
The Man Who Wasn't There 2001 Coen Br. 7.6
Point Blank 1967 John Boorman 7.5
Atlantic City 1980 Louis Malle 7.5
Witness 1985 Peter Weir 7.5
Eraserhead 1977 David Lynch 7.4
Dead Ringers 1988 David Cronenberg 7.4

I don't know about you all, but I'd buy any of these day one. Can't say the same about many of those on BD with similar ratings.

The only thing I can surmise, aside from contract/rights problems, is that some of these directors tend to be independent/somewhat less than mainstream. The titles with similar popularity on BD tend to be from big studios with big name actors.

I'd be interested in your thoughts on these missing titles.

If anyone hasn't seen/noticed yet, the WB re-release of Chinatown is on sale on amazon right now for $8.96.

I would upgrade if available in America. I saw it on the list as an import.

I wouldn't consider Munich a neo-noir.

OK, it's far from Noir and I know there is a Brit version, but when is Sunrise coming to American Blu-Ray?

And thanks for this chain, nice to see the case images in one place.

Not sure why you posted this here. There is a Sunrise thread. And a quick search on this site would tell you the U.S. version has been out for a month now.

Enjoy.

I don't think there's anything confirmed yet, but it should definitely be region free as it's being released in various countries, including some Region A ones like Japan, and Brazil.

edit: The back cover of the Spain release shows the ABC logo.

I edited my post above to add a link to the back of the Spain release showing the ABC region free logo. I'm pretty sure they will all be region free. Most Sony releases are, especially when they're coming out in various regions at the same time.

And of course one of those regions isn't for the states. Why do they always release everywhere else first, I don't get it. I could and might get one of the overseas releases but on the other hand I may just wait for the inevitable region A release.

A little off topic, but I found this film noir tribute and was blown away with how well done it is. One of my new favorite things on the internet!
