I have two local friends meeting me for the Seven Samurai showing, but I'll be flying solo at the Breathless showing the following Tuesday. Not sure if I'll catch the other films in the Tuesday Classics run, though, since it's a hassle to drive back into town on weeknights from my place in Smyrna.

Oh...and I saw a showing of King Kong (1933) at White Hall on Emory University a couple of summers ago. That was pretty amazing.
The biggest bummer about moving from the Boston area to seacoast New Hampshire is missing out on the great art/rep venues. Among the Brattle Theater, the Coolidge Corner, the Harvard University Film Archives, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts Film Program, I was in cinema heaven. While I'm not that far away from Boston here, I'm just far enough to make it inconvenient to travel down there for movie showings.

Agreed... and speaking of monster movies LDs, I still have a player and was searching around on ebay and found a King Kong Criterion LD for $5. It's not the first pressing with all of the cool liner notes, but for $5 I couldn't say no. I was going to pick up The Third Man LD as well, but didn't get to it before it ended. There were a few for sale though.... really need to look through all the CC laserdiscs and see if any are worth getting.

Someone posted a link a while back with all the releases, I think I book marked it. But just in case, anyone have a site with all the CC LD releases? Does criterionforum.com have a list?

Just finished Jules and Jim, I really enjoyed it. What struck me most was the friendship... it really struck home with me. The best man at my wedding is one of those people I would do anything for, and vice versa. Not sure if we would share as much as they did, but I understand the love for a friend.

I really did enjoy the film. And the quality was amazing! I was blown away by how good the film looked. It was a real pleasure to watch, and I see myself watching it again and again. For my first Truffaut film, I'm very pleased.

Now it's time for The Spy Who Came in from the Cold... decided to change it up!

p.s. Also nice to have finally seen the movie to finally come full circle on so many references in other movies to Jules and Jim... really thinking I may have to pull out Vanilla Sky soon. Now that's a movie I'd like to see Criterion release, I know it's newer, but think they could do some cool things with it and Cameron Crowe. Maybe a double release with the original Abre los Ojos.

my order arrived today, in perfect condition, although i will say i was concerned as the box was quite "distressed." no golden ticket, which i would have loved, but the movies at a good price was golden enough. all blind buys, i am quite excited, although i was so torn between "39 steps" versus "foreign correspondent."

Vicky Cristina Barcelona

One my favorites from recent years. One of the few films I've seen 3x in the theatre when it came out.

Wow that Gaumont transfer of Earrings looks brilliant. It's one of the great films, and its good to see Gaumont admitted they messed up - Criterion's own radio silence is pretty frustrating and hurts their reputation a lot by implying they don't see anything wrong with it. It'll be interesting to see if they have any plans down the line with this new transfer...

I never got around to seeing that, but it's one that I do want to see. May need to move it up the ol' Netflix queue.

Im shocked Criterion haven't re done this release - it shocking and very embarrassing, they are known for their excellent transfers and this one looks like someone had some fun with filters at college!

That was how the master they got from Gaumont was. No one knows why Criterion went ahead and used it as they reject masters from licensers all the time (it is a reason they haven't Blu-ray'd Le samourai.)

Anyway, after Criterion's release, and the negative reaction to it and the master used, Gaumont went back and redid it.

Hopefully Criterion will either make a running change, offering replacements for those that bought the Blu or, at the very least, take the DVD and Blu OOP and release a dual-format release using the better master.

Finished Spy Who Came in from the Cold, what a great film. Love Cold War thrillers and wish I had seen this earlier. So much to say, but will have to save it for later. But never-the-less, a great movie and so much fun to watch.

I just finished it as well. I recorded it off TCM as it's been apart of their Oscar nominees marathon.

I really really liked it. Man it has some slow scenes but I thought it looked absolutely beautiful. I really enjoyed Burton's performance as well.

As it turned out, I ended up enjoying the last two thirds of D.W. Griffith's Intolerance. I guess that I just needed the story to get moving. The train chase was my favorite scene, but the Babylon sequences are quite stunning as well.

I'm looking forward to diving into Tess tomorrow.

Tonight, I might go for my Japanese Blu-ray of Night of the Living Dead (1968), since it just showed up in the mail.

At the least, I think this would be a good solution to release the new remaster. Of course, I expected Criterion to do the same for The Leopard at some point and that still hasn't happened. Not that the original release was badly received but the newer remaster is clearly superior. So maybe they could do something similar there too and re-release it as a dual format edition with the new master.

The Spy Who Came in from the Cold is one of my top five Criterion transfers, strictly in terms of picture quality, but it's also one of my favorite titles across the board. I'm so glad that I double-dipped on this one and upgraded my old Criterion DVD.

I read the John Le Carre novel before watching the DVD years ago, but the movie can be enjoyed just as well without doing so.

On the subject of Criterion films, I didn't like Rififi very much. I know it is considered one of the first major caper film ever made. I guess it has clearly shown it's influence on many different films. However, I just did not enjoy it. I disliked the characters and the slow pacing didn't do the film any favors. I also found it felt incredibly dated (instead of it feeling timeless). I guess I'm not a fan.

Holy Moly. The Criterion version looks awful in that still. Downright terrible. They should absolutely put the current versions OOP and do a re-release. Yikes.

Recieved my flash sale order but I was disappointed to see that Blow Out had a cracked corner and missing the booklet. Has this happened to anyone? The chipped piece from the case wasn't inside the case which leads me to believe that it happened before it was shrink-wrapped.

Is there a phone number I can contact or is it better just to email?
