That would be my guess. The blu-ray.com thumbnail had the dual format sticker, but for some reason now it's the normal blu-ray sticker

I just finished Wings of Desire which was too slow for my taste, but the final act was definitely worth it. Paris, Texas is one of my favorite films and the pacing is just right for me, along with the great monologue by Harry Dean Stanton

If the original was 2 BD's, I'd say it's more likely to be 2 BD's and at least 2 or 3 DVD's if they do a dual-format re-release.

Well said. Also, when Hitch was older he'd leave some of the filming to his assistant director. There was no way he'd sit in the car with the camera.

I just watched my first Ozu film, Tokyo Story.

The film is so incredibly powerful and heartbreaking and I instantly fell in love with it. I noticed a little something in my eye during the film because it really makes you think about how incredibly important life and family are, as well as how important it is to cherish both.

I try my best to be a good person, especially to my family, the ones most important to me, but it truly makes you ponder if you're doing everything you can.

Seriously, just wow.

Idk if it was discussed here, but over at Criterionforum I saw that CC has had 3 disc plastic cases developed for them. Submitting to consumer complaints?

I know that there are issues with digipak damage, but idk why there is overall dislike of them by many. I love CC's digipaks...so much more creativity, art, and design efforts go into them. I saw someone state that they look "cheap" once. What!!?? If anything, its the other way around for me. Much more effort goes into designing CC digipaks.

On one hand, I am glad of this news because I don't think every 3 disc+ release warrants a digipak, but I hope they still continue to make them for "special" releases.

Mirrored my sentiments when I watched it for the first time about 2 weeks ago:

Quote:
I just finished Tokyo Story for the first time. First, I should probably preface this by saying I normally avoid "family dramas" because I don't ever feel entertained.

Now that I've got that out of the way, I have to say it was one of the most powerful films I've ever watched. I love movies in almost every genre, I watch movies for enjoyment and entertainment but never really picked one up for an emotional attachment. I might feel one way or another about the characters, or situations but it's fleeting; Tokyo Story wasn't the same however. After it was over, I immediately turned off my player and started reflecting on my own relationship with my parents. I still have both thankfully and I started asking some basic but important questions.

Do I appreciate them?
Do I tell the I love them when I see them?
Do I visit them as often as I'd like?
Do I ever give off the impression that they're a bother or an inconvenience?

It seems fitting however to watch the movie today.
[Show spoiler]In the film, all the parent's wanted was the company of their family. They didn't want gifts, or anything material... to them the gesture was worth much more than any item; sadly the one simple thing they wanted, they only received from someone who wasn't their child. My mom is basically the same way, I say it's odd that I watched the movie today because her birthday is coming up next week. Today my brother and I met to get our pictures taken for her. We both have this thing about having our picture taken but we knew she'd really enjoy it. Again, the gesture... not the gift. It should make the occasion that much more special and memorable.

Special shout out to Andsoitgoes for selling me an extra copy for a great price, without the deal I never would've bought or possibly even watched the movie at all.
And for anyone that was wondering, the picture gift was a slam dunk, I talked to my 2 or 3 days after and she was still thanking me for it. Now I need to get some extra prints ready for the grandparents.

Excellent review, smoss! I'm glad we share the same opinion on the film.

It's one of the only films that I've seen that places emphasis on the importance of community with one another than material possessions or anything else. That's honestly the true meaning of family and being together, in my opinion. It's incredibly sad how they all "ended up" together, though.

By the way, I too tend to avoid these type of films as they never seem to be interesting to me, but I definitely have a new appreciation for it and I look forward to watching Late Spring next.

A Lizard in a Woman's Skin & The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh. Would these titles suit the CC?

Very highly so! Nolan plays expertly with 3(?) different timelines. Clever dialogue too and the mystery element to it all is very gripping. Sure, you can see that it's more or less an experiment, a practice for the much greater things that were to come, but oh boy, what an experiment it is! The new transfer has been supervised and approved by Nolan himself. I need to add Following to my collection too.

I very much enjoyed this one . Made for a very small budget of $6000 and well worth a look. The commentary by Nolan is excellent to watch straight afterwards too.

As for Jules and Jim, it did not really seem like a movie I would enjoy initially so I held off on a flash sale purchase and went with La Haine instead. I do see a trend of me buying newer titles ; post 70's cinema. Just because I know the actors and Directors I suppose. But I do want to get into older film.

As for just buying Criterions, I really mean *mostly. I will follow a director once I discover him or an actor for sure. I really enjoyed Hunger so have other stuff from McQueen; same with Malick and SoderBergh. So I for sure wont keep a good film away because it is not CC; just no more random "hey this is from Korea" or "I kind of likes this in the 90's" impulse buys to save for CC titles.
My best advice would be to avoid blind buying. If you rent or stream some titles first you may save yourself some money and some grief. While I own many Criterion Collection titles, I have rented some that I would never want to own. There are films in the collection that will not be to everyone's taste.
Happy hunting!

Sometimes this thread bums me out.

But seeing people react to seeing their first Ozu is the kind of thing that makes it worthwhile.

I just found out that Kurosawa's Throne of Blood has 2 subtitle translations. Which one is the one to go with?

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

Not a criterion title, but I wanted to post that I just finished watching the original Oldboy and I'm really surprised I've waited this long to watch it. I loved every minute of it. It's the type of movie that is right up my alley with it's emphasis on the smallest details. The editing was groundbreaking, especially for its time. I think I restrained myself from rushing into it because I felt Stoker a bit of a letdown, although I still enjoyed it.

I'm already considering it top 50 material.

It's a wonderful, intimate little film (and it's not even my favorite Ozu). It would make a perfect (albeit downbeat) double-feature with Leo McCarey's MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW, which unfortunately is only on Blu-ray in Region B so far. I hope Criterion also upgrades Ozu's FLOATING WEEDS soon.
