Too much focus on Jordan's color when my gripe is the WAY he was handed the part.

All the actors who tested for Cap, Thor, Peter Parker, Loki, Gwen Stacy etc.--you don't just hand a new actor a part. You do that for veteran actors who have a track record.

Because history shows that the person the studio and directors THINK will be perfect is often beat out by someone who just nails the audition. and why wouldn't you want to know for sure who's the best?

That and making Reed/Ben young as the other two.

The race thing is a waste of time. Actors of color will, going ahead, take roles originally written as white. That's inevitable no matter how you feel about it.
Waste of time to get upset about it.

And no it probably won't work the other way too much---Depp as Tonto not withstanding.

There are so many people that are upset at Jordan's casting for Johnny Storm and I have those same feelings. But, I just read some of the comments over at Slashfilm and something occurred to me. 20th Century Fox manufactured all of this drama as a deliberate attempt to create controversy and drama over the reboot and I'm starting to think it was very deliberate.

Instead of producing a movie with a great story and good acting (we all know how horrible the first two Fantastic Four films were and that Fox has a horrible track record with their mediocre productions of the Marvel films they have produced) and that they're desperate to create a mega hit with these films.

To hear Michael B. Jordan tell it, he's even fallen into step with Fox with continuing the show the "race card" because it keeps that drama front and center through the production stages of this film and it keeps every riled up about it. When the choice of Johnny Storm was announced, there was the usual hate that came along with the decision and then it died down, people started forgetting about it. Then, everywhere you turned, Michael Jordan started doing interview after interview, keeping the "race issue" front and center, deliberately orchestrating this drama to keep everyone talking about their outrage over this casting, instead of just letting it die down.

Personally, I think 20th Century Fox execs as well as Michael B. Jordan should all be ashamed of themselves for continuing to stroke this fire. Because what happens with controversy regarding a movie or television series? It forces more people to go and see it just to see what all the controversy is about.

It's disgusting, pathetic, and continues to hold my contempt for 20th Century Fox and for Michael B. Jordan.

If only they had cast someone white, then we could all move on to complain about something else. Through sheer vein-busting, jaw-clenching, sphincter-tightening repetition, the posts in this thread have finally convinced me of the error of my ways. Black people have no business being cast in traditionally white roles. If a character started out as white, he/she should remain white until the end of time.

You are so ridiculous I find it painful. If anything he's been totally classy considering your type is screaming at the top of your lungs how unfortunate it is a black guy was cast. I'm done with this thread. Take your wild conspiracy theory and stuff it. I'm sure the guy would love to do interviews where the issue most pressing that he has to field questions on isn't the color of his skin.

How is it ridiculous? It wasn't even my idea to begin with, it's posted in the comments section over at Slashfilm, I just expanded on my opinion of it.

Xander, and just for your information? This wouldn't be the first time that a movie studio from Hollywood has pulled this kind of stunt in order to get people to go see a movie they produced. Happens with TV shows all the time.

Or, have you forgotten the notorious lesbian kiss involving Jadzia Dax and one of her character's friends on DS9? I remember Paramount got record ratings with that episode because everyone wanted to see the 'lesbian kiss'.

Thanks. I'm just pointing out that the movie industry in Hollywood has pulled these stunts before. My reply was posted here because I remembered that Fox Studios is trying to turn their Marvel superhero films into their version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for 20th Century Fox. They have a lot riding on it and by generating this controversy, they're deliberately creating 'buzz' about their films in an attempt to get everyone to go and see their films.

The reason I feel it's a desperate move is that probably because Marvel is on the verge of revoking Fox's rights to the Marvel films that they currently have. The fact is, Fox is rushing Fantastic Four to the theaters because I believe they were on the verge of losing the rights to the film unless they produced a new FF film.

With only X-Men and Fantastic Four under their control, I just don't see Fox pulling off the type of movie event that marvel is currently producing. Marvel/Disney has a lot of characters and properties to pull their ideas from and all Fox has are X-Men and FF.

Are people really crying because Human Torch is black?... who gives a shit. Mike Duncan did a kick ass Kingpin and he was originally a white character.

I didn't say that Josh Trank made his casting choice the way he did. As with all directors, he's forced to follow the directions of the movie studio or they simply halt production and they find another director. This happens all the time. Take a look at the dustup that happened with The Walking Dead.

When Frank Durabont refused to follow the instructions of AMC, they canned him as director and brought in someone else for Season 2. I stand by what I said in that movie studios and networks make controversial decision for a movie or TV series as a deliberate attempt to draw interest in what they are producing. To sit there and say that studios don't do that is just assinine.

I'm not being sarcastic or anything but pointing something out. There are multiple examples of movie studios doing things that are controversial. Even NBC has done the same thing. Take a look at SMASH. When the creator of the series was told by NBC to write the characters a certain way for Season 2, she refused to do that, and NBC ended up firing her from the series.

Josh Trank is no different. Fox wanted to shake things up and to get everyone engaged in the melodrama so they opted to cast Johnny Storm as a black character. Not only that, but Josh Trank and Michael B. Jordan keeping the "race issue" in the media by continuing to bring it up in every interview that they do is just a pathetic attempt to generate interest in something that hasn't even started filming yet.

After all, Fox isn't exactly a respectable network, when they have the likes of Glenn Beck on their network. So, they deliberately create this drama to generate interest in their movies.

Nope. It's because the entire cast looks like garbage and don't even look like they could even pretend to be the Fantastic Four.

BIGOT!!

I mean that's what you're gonna get when you say you don't like this cast or the way this movie is shaping up.

No matter what anybody says about why they fear for this movie---some PC person always comes back to claiming people are against the black actor.

Throw in the occasional person who, for no good reason at this point, laments that they changed the Torch and voila, an endless back and forth about this movie being lambasted only by bigots.

Even if Jordan turned out to be the best thing since sliced bread---the other casting choices and the entire way they've gone about doing this reboot point to a complete fiasco.

One glimmer of hope I see is that since the announcement of a really young Lex Luthor in MoS 2--maybe Fox will go in another direction age-wise for Doom.

I can hope can't I?
I doubt it. Doom will most likely be a college student just like the rest.

He did a so-so Kingpin in a crappy film. You do remember the incredibly lame playground dance-off, don't you?

The director's cut of that movie is fantastic. But I agree, the playground fight is cheesy. I did like Duncan as Kingpin though. He was as ruthless and menacing as I'd always hoped he would be on screen. He's probably the best part of the movie actually, next to Favreau as Foggy.

I agree. I love the director's cut and I love Duncan as Fisk. Playground scene was not great but doesn't break the movie.

I would have been happy to have him reprise the role in a Spider-Man movie or Daredevil sequel.

Changing his race didn't hurt the character one bit. He was great. R.I.P.

No, it's the laziness of the casting. Like "Hey, I'm a big great director after that one film I made, and I'm going to work with that one guy I am comfortable with working with again", instead of thinking about it with casting directors and really choosing someone who is right for the role in looks and personality.

This movie will suck, if it gets made. Lets hope it doesn't...
