I just finished watching Roman Polanski's Tess (1979).
What a phenomenal, yet tragic film. I absolutely adored every second of it. The approximately three hour long runtime went by so incredibly fast. I can pretty much say that it is up there as one of my favorite Polanski films after this one viewing. 01. Chinatown (1974) 02. Repulsion (1965) 03. Tess (1979) 04. Rosemary's Baby (1968) 05. The Ninth Gate (1999) 06. The Ghost Writer (2010) 07. Cul-De-Sac (1966) 08. Carnage (2011) |

I watched Kurosawa's RAN earlier today. GREAT, GREAT film. But damn, that fool was annoying! I hated him in every sinlge scene. Now, I made the big mistake and watched this film in a bad german dubbing. His voice was VERY annoying. Maybe he is actually funny in japanese? Next time I'll watch it in japanese with subtitles. That's for sure.

I didn't like Eraserhead at all. I can see it becoming a favorite movie for me and my friends to watch for the same reasons we watch The Room. It was just too vile for me to get into. I respect it for its atmosphere, craft, and imagination but I was completely bothered through the entire experience. I'm sure this was Lynch's intentions, but that alone doesn't allow me to enjoy it.
Maybe another time. |

![]() I also did not think Vol 1 was quite as graphic as everyone was making it out to be. Maybe Vol 2 will change my mind ![]() |

I just started watching my John Cassavetes box set.
Last night I watched Shadows for the first time. Tonight I watched the 200 minute documentary on John Cassavetes. Astounding is all I can say. The amount of insight and wisdom contained in this documentary "A Constant Forge" is unbelievable. I truly just discovered John Cassavetes for the first time. I cannot believe how much of a humanist he was and how much emphasis on love, compassion and enthusiasm he delivered in his films. He focused not on comfortable topics, but on topics that were bothersome, disturbing, irritating, maddening, provoking and inspiring. He didn't want audiences to laugh or be comfortable watching his movies. He was not driven by money or materialism but by the social and human condition. What a magical person he must have been. The actors and friends he worked with were quite fortunate to have known him. It's just phenomenal. Has anyone else seen this documentary too? My only criticism of the documentary is that the filmmaker didn't talk or show anything about Cassavetes' acting career, nor was there much on his own personal life. It's a LONG documentary film but it was definitely worth watching, even though it might just be one long, rambling love letter to Cassavetes. |

It was more of a celebration of all his work, I do love Nymph though, I adore the digressions and the structure to it, Little Organ School wad a very powerful but haunting chapter, but then again I am obsessed with that Bach piece! I sorta wish Nympho was more depressing and hopeless, and maybe had a few slow mo shots and wish he used chalkboard for the NYMPH()MANIAC title card, just to give it that look. I also don't didn't feel it was that controversial, then again nor was Melancholia, I just was hoping nymph would have been same level as Antichrist, beautiful yet hanging, feels you with dread but you can't help watch it, another dark fairy tale. Need to see the full version though, Part II lacked a lot compared to the first chapter, HATED the floating scene as it was just poorly done, much like those bells at end of Breaking The Waves. I loved the danger to part II, just wish Part I had that danger. People are calling this is Magnus Opus, while it was fantastically made, and such fresh film - I still film Dogville and Antichrist are his best work. Given that the film spent a long time tied up in litigation over who owns the rights, it shouldn't be too surprising that no one has released it yet. Now that things seem to be settled, maybe someone will release it soon.
