How to add hundreds of titles to your collection

So you've got a few hundred titles on your shelves, and you can't even imagine documenting them all.
Just the horror of entering all those titles makes you want to stay in bed and watch Videodrome.

Here's how you do it:

Purchase (or borrow from work or a friend) a Bar Code Scanner.

Here is the one I bought from Amazon for $25 a few years ago when I wrote my own collection software

Plug it into a USB port; it acts just like a keyboard.
You may have to tell it to add a line feed after every code scan.

Open Notepad, or your favorite "Text" editor.
(it's best not to use a word processor, such as WinWord. Notepad is all you need.)

!! Make Two Lists: One for DVD's and One for Blu-rays !!

Devise a filename scheme, and make a location to save them in.
e.g. MyDVDs001.txt & MyBlues001.txt

Scan 50 DVD UPC codes from the back of your cases.
Save file.
Save file as new name: MyDVDs002.txt

Scan 50 more movies.
Save file.
Save file as new name: MyDVDs003.txt

Repeat......

Scan all Blu-rays same as DVDs...
Repeat......

The idea behind creating new files is so that if something goes wrong while you're scanning, they act as backups & milestones, so the most you have to Re-scan is 50 titles.

Also, if each new filename represents the start of a new pile or shelf, backtracking is much easier if you get lost in the process.

Of course that is just a suggestion, and some brave folks will just use one text file from start to finish.

(There are folks who can ten-key like lightning, and can enter the UPCs like Data on StarTrek.
For them a scanner is of little use, but for us mortals.....)

Once you have your master disc lists (DVD & Blu-rays) you can:

1. Go to "My BDs" or "My DVDs"
2. Click on "Import"
3. Paste all your scanned UPC codes
4. Click on "Import Preview"

and so on.

So don't fret over manually inputting all those discs on your shelves.
This is the 21st century, we have the technology!!

Of course, you could always just hire someone to do it for you.......
