Default The Beyond (1981) (Limited Edition)

The Beyond Blu-ray

Quote:

A remote and cursed hotel, built over one of the seven gateways to hell, becomes a malevolent abyss that begins devouring both the bodies and the souls of all who enter, in a graphic frenzy of gory crucifixions, chunkblowing chain-whippings, eyeball impalements, sulfuric acid meltdowns, flesh-eating tarantulas, throat-shredding demon dogs and ravenous bloodthirsty zombies.
[Show spoiler]Update (11/19):

Release date: February 10

Quote:
We are also pleased to announce our Blu-ray release of Lucio Fulci's supernatural masterpiece THE BEYOND, also arriving February 10 in a super-deluxe 3 disc special edition. Both titles will be available for pre-order later this week. Keep an eye on this page for all the details. Here is a peek at the GLOW-IN-THE-DARK cover art.

[Show spoiler]Seems like The Beyond coming to blu-ray may be sooner than later.

From The Swimmer press release just issued by GR:

Quote:
Among the next Blu-ray titles from Grindhouse Releasing are Ruggero Deodato's CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST and Lucio Fulci's THE BEYOND, for which Murawski and Innis recently shot a new featurette on location in New Orleans.

The Beyond is now Fulci's most-reissued film. This will probably be my 5th pickup since I first saw the film theatrically at a revival in 1998. I didn't like it at first but has since grown on me. I'd love to see someone revisit House By the Cemetery, this time using the US theatrical poster and the alternate opening music. That music was much creepier IMO

Just to make things clear, this is not an official artwork for forthcoming blu release. It's just a random pic I snagged off the internet, to go with the announcement.

Day one, for sure! Amongst the Fulci flicks I've seen, I give it a slight edge on Zombi 2.

I still think that title goes to Zombie/Zombi 2/Zombie Flesh Eaters. In the US alone, there were four DVDs (Anchor Bay, Shriek Show, 2x Blue Underground) and the Blue Underground blu-ray (two, if you include the classic poster single side re-release). Not to mention the VHS releases, laserdisc, and I think even beta!

With The Beyond in the US, it's only been on DVD twice, both of which were produced by Grindhouse, with the first published by Anchor Bay. There's also the VERY rare US VHS based around its US theatrical release titled "Seven Doors of Death", with an alternate music score.

Both are must haves. Wonder about the picture quality on THE BEYOND in comparison to the Arrow release.

Completely different. The U.S. opening credit music is used on the U.S. trailers and TV spots for THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY. You can hear some of it around 26 seconds into this trailer:

I have The Beyond (as Seven Doors of Death) on a PD type DVD set called Walking Dead Collection.

I think it's had several borderline bootleg releases like that.

7DoD DVDs are just The Beyond...not actually 7DoD. Packaging lies.

The Arrow release is region free and all the HD extras are readable in a standard US player, FYI. There's a second disc (DVD) of bonus features which are in PAL, though. I'm not buying this unless they have more (or notably different) features, which seems unlikely, the Arrow one is extremely comprehensive. The steelbook is also pretty awesome, though this artwork is cool too. I think that the picture quality is great on the Arrow release (better than their House by the Cemetery and City of the Living Dead, both of which were outdone by the Blue Underground versions).

I doubt Grindhouse will be using the same master used for Arrow's disc, so there's little doubt the Grindhouse transfer will look much better. Grindhouse, like Synapse, doesn't seem content to use subpar video materials and will do what they can to harvest their own.

And that's exactly why I haven't bought this classic on blu ray yet.

Yeah that's why I'll be double dipping any titles they release, and I'm very excited for a organic transfer of Cannibal Holocaust

I'm normally very forgiving of discs of films like this but the Arrow blu was practically unwatchable. I know they're a great label now, this was released in their fallow years, there was so much edge enhancement it was laughable. Can't wait for this one.
