What new MGM deal? I thought (hoped?) Shout's initial deal with the studio was more of a long-term partnership and not something Shout would have to negotiate for every year.

Nah, these deals are done with studios for batches of titles, and then they make more deals later.

Scream has done at least two with Universal, because as soon as they'd made the second one, they announced Prince Of Darkness, their most heaven requested title.

I assume they've done multiple MGM deals so far too.

I still can't believe - or understand - that we can't even get even the bloody thing on DVD, never mind Blu!

Every title they (or any other label) license from any distributor is under a specific contract. They pick the titles they want from the MGM catalog and sign a "deal" to release those (and only those) titles.

If they decide they want to release a title not included in their first contract, they must go back to MGM and ask for it, put it under a "new deal" and then they will be able to issue it out on blu-ray or dvd.

Most big distributors (like MGM, Fox, Paramount, etc.) may require that each deal consists of a large number of titles (rather than just one or two films, which explains why only a select few companies have the budget to make big deals with the major distributors).

So, shout could say "we want Motel Hell, Lord of Illusions and Pumpkinhead", but they may need to get quite a few more for MGM to grant them access to the ones they want, at a higher fee to Shout and a greater profit for MGM. Although this is not always the case.

So, since Scream Factory have begun announcing new MGM titles, and big-distributor liscensing is typically for quite a few titles at a time, it's safe to assume there is a second deal (all of these "2nd Wave MGM Titles" have already been selected and licensed at this point. Their minds are made-up about which they'll be releasing in the coming months).

So, if they decide they want a few more Universal titles, they'll have to go back to them too, and make a new deal (the 3rd?) for whichever they want.

Hopefully that clears up the licensing process.

SHORT VERSION:
Every deal is only for some titles, if they want others after the first deal, they have to go back and get them under a seperate contract, or new deal.

There's a bootleg blu-ray version floating around that, I hear, has pretty good audio and video quality.

There's a reasonable copy on YouTube. Still, it would be nice to have the option of owning a legit version!

Oh, Without a doubt, I was just saying.. If (knock on wood) it is never released on Home Video again.

It's just one of those titles that are stuck somewhere and no matter how many people want it out, it just doesn't seem to be happening.

It's like there's some vacuum somewhere that sucks up movie rights and never let's them see the light of day (other than the metaphorical vacuums that are Warner Bros and Lionsgate).

If I'm not mistaken, didn't they mention something on facebook about considering Contamination .7 for a blu-ray? Saying something along the lines that the decision to make it DVD-only was made before they could gauge it's possible popularity on blu-ray?

I'd be game for it. And it'd be cool to have it with a reversible Troll 3 cover.

I hope the thing about Echo Bridge is true. There are some titles in that catalog that are in dire need of legit releases.

I'd really like to see good releases of:

ExistenZ
The Reflecting Skin
Hellraiser: Bloodline
Hellraiser: Inferno
Immortality (A.K.A. The Wisdom of Crocodiles)
Office Killer
Dead Man
Equilibrium
The Hole

I believe you have said this before. It was misread from their post saying that it was not in their plans, I believe.

Not to mention Hellraiser 3, Children of the Corn 2, From Dusk Till Dawn, The Faculty, Dracula 2000, Ritual (possibility of a Tales from the Crypt trilogy set), Phantoms (like a motherf*cker), Dust Devil, Four Rooms, etc.

EDIT: Yep. Checked their site. Did a search for From Dusk Till Dawn and a Fred Williamson triple feature came up. Also did a search of their BDs and only Asylum films came up. Must be true.

Really hoping that Shout can work something out now that Echo Bridge has lost the titles. Curse and H20 are in desperate needs of special editions - especially considering that Daniel Farrands has a 35mm print of the producer's cut in his collection.

I Really hope that Shout can work something out now, but the reality is that the titles might end up @ Lionsgate. As far as i know, they just got the streaming rights for the Echo Bridge/Miramax titles.

With Scream now (hopefully) able to acquire Halloween 6, H20, and Resurrection, all that needs to happen now is for Anchor Bay to give up Halloween 4 and 5 and Scream would have all of the sequels!

Obviously unlikely to happen of course but it's nice to dream.

If Scream does get the Echo Bridge sequels, they'll need to be Collector's Editions to match II and III (no matter how awful they are).

Hey. Curse was alright. The other two, namely H20, sucked ass.

If I had to place a wager on any one company getting these titles, I'd probably bet on Lionsgate. They've got a preexisting relationship with Miramax and have more or less exhausted the titles from their initial deal, to my knowledge. Frankly, I'm surprised they didn't pick up the Halloween sequels in their initial deal.

I thought Resurrection was terrible. 6 and H20 I have so they must be good enough lol - I have 1,2,4,5,6 - I will revisit part III to see if my tastes have changed..
I hope Scream gets some of them
