But, never ever having seen "Leviathan" I'm on board, cause the artwork looks awesome and it's 80's, late 80's but still. I hope it's actually a cool film. Something tells me MGM got wind of "The Abyss" being in production and fast-tracked something in the same vein hoping to capitalize on it's hopeful box office success, but I'm just basing this all on the name and cover art.

Looking at their release dates I might be right they both came out in 89, just months apart. "Leviathan" came out first though. I've never actually seen all of "The Abyss" either, always seemed kinda boring to me.

EDIT - Cast featuring Daniel Stern, Ernie Hudson and Peter Weller? I'm in for sure, regardless. Only thing that worries me is that previous releases seem to only have featured a trailer, hopefully "Shout!/Scream Factory" can drum something up.
Leviathan is great! A nice little atmospheric underwater horror thriller with a great cast, including a good looking babe(Amanda Pays). You will not regret getting this!
Never cared much for The Abyss either or Deep Star Six.

The Abyss is a great movie and ridiculously absent from Blu-ray. Leviathan is a semi-cool, gritty sci-fi horror film that I'm on the fence about.

I love The Abyss!

Leviathan is a cool B movie which has the same setting as The Abyss, but is actually an Alien rip off...but it's a fun one.

I always thought it was more like The Thing underwater, but any way you slice it, it's a wonderful and under-appreciated sci-fi horror film.

It also had the best stereo separation of just about any 2 channel mix on laserdisc.

Leviathan is definitely a poor man's The Thing. But one you can watch over and over again because it's a fun watch. I've been really, really hoping for Scream to get it since 2012 so I'm pretty happy

Exactly this. "The Rift" would be great too.

I believe John Carpenter mentions it in an interview on one of the discs.

Awesome news for Leviathan.
I was just about to buy the old DVD yesterday. Incredible timing.

Thank you Shout Factory!

I'm now thinking DOLLS is the mystery August title. I found out recently that UK label 101 Films had announced Leviathan some time ago, so it's safe to assume Shout may have also picked it up along with Leviathan.

Well Leviathan and Dolls have been my #1 and 2 for awhile now, so that'd be A-Ok with me

Add Criterion's release of The Brood and the slight possibility of Sisters from Criterion to that list. Your year may be made.

Apparently an announcement was made some time late last year or early this year through 101 Film's facebook page but nothing further has been said about it.

I don't understand the "Dolls" speculation. It's still being manufactured in Japan, which is also Region A so I'm not sure that MGM would split the rights like that within the same region. Maybe somebody knows something I don't?

I don't get that logic....

That's like saying a release in the UK can't get released in Australia, as theyre both Region B areas, but it's happened, especially with MGM horror catalogue titles.

So I'd expect Dolls to come because we've seen a release in both the UK and Japan, which means they have a HD transfer ready for liscening and releasing.

That's not the way rights work. It's not regional, it's usually country-to-country, although North American distributors often get US & CAN. rights "packaged" together from distributors, when they happen to own the rights in both territories.

So MGM Japan (assuming there is one?) and MGM US are seperate distributors entirely. therefore rights in one do not affect the other.

Now that Leviathan is announced, we need a companion to go with it like Screamers (1995) with you guessed it Peter Weller, Sadly it's a Sony.
