Ok, according to my SCEE beta trial manager, firmware 2.0 doesn't exist.

Still, SONY Gamer's Day should be starting shortly! Should be some good news and media coming.

That's what I have been saying. This was a rumor, nothing was confirmed.

Actually google it, apparantley details have been posted by Sony and than pulled.. so this is more than a rumour, it has some backing to it.

Of course a date was not annouced.

It's about time. This is a good update but I still think they need to work on the playstatio store with more stuff for me to download.

Interesting take on the source of the rumor from kotaku...

"The thing is that the tipster says the details were posted to SCEA's official press site and removed, but I can't think of a single time when Sony has posted details on their firmware updates to their press site, it's just not used that way. Also, I have the site in my RSS reader and it never popped up."

Since my tv sees only 480 and 1080i, will this new update upscale the 720p PS3 games to 1080i?

I don't see how this would be coming out soon since 1.7 just got released recently. It would be nicew to have upscailing for standard dvd's though.

We don't know how much they're working on simultaneously (maybe many small teams) so what wasn't yet ready for the minor 1.7 update could be finished now or pretty soon.

Alot of people are questioning why it would jump from 1.7 to 2.0. This has happened with alot of updates. Whenever there is a big update for something, they jump like that.
Everything that has been talked about for such a long time is included in this update, and therefore it wouldn't make sense for just a jump from 1.7 to 1.8. This is a huge update.

Also, Sony has dismissed it as "Speculation". This can be taken a few different ways.

Death-- I'm not sure, but from what it said- I think so.

Lastly, anyone hear any news from Gamers Day? And is there any site devoted to news coverage of it?

I know what you mean. Firmware updates have been coming out since launch day and we love sony for what the updates give us. The ps3 just gets better and better with each update. We haven't had a major update in quite a while. However there is one thing that is missing from the update list which is psp to ps3 connectivity wirelessly. There has been talk of ps3 games using the psp as an optional, but additonal controller. This hasn't happened yet. Will the update be out by the end of the week? I'll be on the lookout for it.

There's no converting yet for anything and we don't have converting for ps1 or ps2 either. You want to convert DVD's to match what quality? blu-ray? I wonder if the ps3 hardware is capable of converting? If not, then we can forget about converting? If the hardware can't convert, could you add a firmware update to fix the problem. Strange that this update is considered to be a rumor. Maybe sony is adding a few more things to the update or maybe the update isn't ready to be released yet and that's why it was removed.

If any new updates come out for the ps3, you can read about it at ps3.ign.com. As of right now, there are no articles that mention that another update is out or in the works. That doesn't mean that there won't be another update out soon.
