Exactly. Could be as simple as a new audio track. But, why wouldn't they include it with the 2D version?

Most likely to get people to spend more, could be as simple as that.

wait I'm confused, so the Cretaceous Cut is on the 2D blu and possibly on the 3D blu - but not on the 2D of the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack? - wow, that's sneaky from Fox trying to recoup this film's theatrical loss by putting the original cut on the higher priced deluxe version - 'clever'

some clarification here:

the 3D and the 2D versions on the 3D combo pack are the theatrical dubbed cut of the film

a third version of the film; the 'Cretaceous Cut' is a bonus feature that is viewable in '2D only' and runs 75 minutes in length.

The 'Cretaceous Cut' is exclusive to the combo pack and sadly not in 3D - win some lose some ... oh well

Well, thanks for looking into it. I think this one is a pass for me.
I could watch in 2D, but I feel like I'd at least want to check out the 3D version once or twice.
And somehow I think the impact of watching in 3D will be somewhat diminished if I'm obliged to mute the audio...

According to this site's review, it's viewable in 3D as well. This may be a buy for me after all. I work at a video store and had to listen to this movie several times over the weekend. Yikes.

here's the response to my inquiry:

As I understand it, the combo pack only comes with one bluray that has the 2d and 3d versions of both cuts, it doesn't have a seperate 3d bluray. Considering the alternate cut would be pretty easy to do with seamless branching (since its just different audio and no interludes) it makes sense you would get it both ways.

Okay, thanks for the details. If that bonus audio cut disc is somehow playable in 3D also, let us know.

The 3D was good, though they could have pushed it quite a bit more at times in Walking with Dinosaurs.

I actually prefer the theatrical cut with the voiced over characters even though the dialogue and voice acting could have been done much better. Some of the dialogue is so bad it's like the actors improvised at times and poorly at that. Nevertheless, warts and all, I feel the developers were on the right track. I like having a story with narration. It helped me to become more emotionally invested in the characters and storyline. Also, the theatrical cut is short enough as it is at only 87 minutes. The 3d is great btw.

I'll agree that Fantasia can take getting used to as there is pretty much zero dialog, but a musical story told through expression. I do like National Geographic and Nature documentaries, but they do have narration occasionally to break up the silence.

Wall to wall dialog (non stop dialog), as presented in the theatrical version of Walking with Dinosaurs, can sometimes be overwhelming to an audience, so it's a good idea to let the film breathe now and then with a few scenes of very little dialog and let the sounds and motions tell the story during those times. Same goes for music unless it's intentionally a musical like Fantasia.

But very nice they offered this alternate version! I will consider this one as long as that version is in 3D.

The Cretaceous version is able to be played in 3D and tons better than the theatrical. I'm glad I bought it, but I will only view the Cretaceous version. The animation is extremely well done too. Just wish it had lossless audio on the alternate cut.

Just finished watching this. Thought the 3D was very good....especially the detail and dimension. Depth was here and there....but when it was there, it was very good.

The movie itself was meh. Really thought I was watching a BBC documentary with movie like elements. The voice acting ranged from mildly adequate to beyond bad, imo. Not something I would watch again anytime soon, unfortunately (despite the very good 3D).

I watched the Cretaceous Cut, which I thought was good. It could have been shortened up a bit. I really didn't want to subject myself to the talking dinosaurs. There seemed to be some pretty good pop outs along with the depth.

Favorite pop out scene is when he's looking in that same spot over the ridge for the female Dino friend of his, but she's not there and there are some flowers of some kind that fly all over out of the screen. I wish all of the 3D in this one held up to that level. 3D is good, but they could have pushed it more into the stronger depths of 3D.

The Cretaceous 3D cut is a relief for a more documentary style 3D film and a great idea to include it on the blu ray 3D. Thanks for that info.

I agree about the 3D. It was good...very good in parts....but it could have been stronger overall.

That was a good pop out scene involving the flowers flying in the background. I also thought the bird flying high above looking down over the land was a good pop out. There were a couple of those scenes I believe.

This, I have to say is one of those movies I could have very easily made a "pass" on....however the price dropped enough for me to pick up a copy (just for the heck of it really!)

I have to say I was kinda impressed - the 3d is pretty good, like said before maybe could have been pushed a little more in places....what got me the most was the detailing of the dinosaurs! A top notch job!

I watched the movie with the usual "character" voice over - which was highly criticized on this site initially, and I didnt find it too distracting - I was glad that the "characters" mouths weren't animated to mimic the talking, I guess the general idea was more to have the characters "telling" the story as opposed to "acting" the story! I did chuckle a little with some of the script.....Patchy's "dive" into the river was quite comical

After watching the feature I gave the cretaceous cut a quick flick - and to be honest I found it drab and rather boring - a bit like watching video of a fishtank on your TV!!! What I really would have liked to have seen for this cut was a documentary format - I was imagining David Attenborough's voice calling the action of a young dinosaur's growing up adventure as it was playing.....I think that a slightly educational approach would have worked really well for this cut of the film.....

It's kind of strange that this movie was hyped up around release time - yet it seemingly fell of the face of the earth (a bit like the subject animals really) quickly after release...guess it just didnt hit the right chords with the public....

Chris
