USA Winged Planet (2012) / Wings (2014) Blu-ray 3D [Region Free TBC] [BBC]

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/winged-p...&skuId=4482062

Best Buy has this BBC feature as a 3D Exclusive.. unfortunately, I can't find much information on it. Some short clips look interesting though! A neat behind-the-scenes feature on Youtube shows some neat stuff in filming certain scenes:

..But seeing that only 1 camera is used on that, I have to wonder how the 3D is. There's also a lot of ultra-wide/fisheye type shots from the other videos, so I don't know how well that translates into 3D.

The BBC stuff is usually very good, but I have to wonder on this one (with no reviews, and being a best buy exclusive)

Anyone see this?

Thumbs up Winged Planet 3D

I went and got this last Thursday at Best Buy. They had 7 copies in back none out on shelves yet. Took them 20 minutes to find it for me but was worth it. Everybody has a different opinion on the 3D. I only had time so far to watch about 5 minutes of this so far but for colors and depth it is great to me. Right at the beginning I paused it when the birds were like they are on the cover and the first bird came out of the screen about 2 feet and looked great. But that is my opinon. Well worth getting a copy of this.

Interesting. Will keep it in mind. Thanks. This looks like a flight vulture simulator in 3D. Vultures are endangered in many areas. Some are the largest flying birds on earth; though that would be the Condor.

Picked this up today at BB along with Walking with Dinos 3D. It was located on a a display with a bunch of other BBC nature documentaries.

Had a chance to watch this. A mix of some average , really good and just plain awful 3D depending on the particular scene.

High up aerial shots really work don't here, as it essentially looks like a group of birds in the foreground with the background completely flat.

What really works are scenes such as an extended scene with a swarm of birds flying through a cemetery which was quite impressive in regards to the sense of spacing of the birds within the swarm and the background as well as the final scene with Japanese cranes dancing/jumping around on the ground.

Film is kind of too long (90) minutes for this type of documentary as it tends to drag on a little. Overall, 3D starts out fairly weak in the beginning, average in the middle, but then the final two chapters are probably the highlight of the film.

I would not buy this title if you are buying strictly for 3D. If you like this type of documentary, then the 3D in certain scenes does add to the experience, but as mentioned previously, it's a very inconsistent 3D experience.

I thought everything about this disc was superb, including the 3D. I highly recommend it. Spectacular cinematography, and the dept only makes it better!

Thanks for the reviews on the 3D and film. This almost got my cash till I thought about 24.99$ being the same price as The Hobbit 2 3D. I'll hold off on this till it hits the 20 range, but the concept of watching birds from their point of view in flight is something I absolutely would enjoy watching, having wished as a kid for the ability to fly like a bird. Like the Birdman from Captain America Winter Soldier. The 3D sounds about right for this wide, vista scenery shots from so high up in the air, where 3D takes a natural and expected hit in effectiveness.

Sorry to bump an old thread
But was trying to find some reviews on the 3D quality of this title.

It appears from responses here it's pretty mixed at best, but it's currently on sale at Best Buy for $16.99 so thought it may be worth a shot checking it out

Is the new April 7, 2015 "Wings 3D" different from the March 18, 2014 release of "Winged Planet 3D"?

Both are the same length, from BBC, have John Downer as Director, and Narrated by David Tennant.

Sounds like a possible reissue of the older film, with new packaging for some reason. Not sure.

Default Winged Planet/Wings

Both BBC featuring David Tennant. I own Wings. Can anyone who has both tell me the difference? (ie Is it worth buying Winged Planet it seems to be 9 minutes longer?) Thanks!

Hi robtadrian,

Thought it was the same documentary just repackaged. I have Earth Winged Planet.

I know this is an old question, but I just got a chance to compare the two documentaries. The films consist of a lot of 2-6 min long clips, some returning to the same type of bird at different times of year. Each film splices these together in a different way, so it's not easy to say exactly what additional footage is included in "Winged Planet 3D" (93m56s) vs. "Wings 3D" (84m43s).

Most of the clips appear to be the same or maybe shortened a bit, but there are some scenes from the longer Winged Planet that were removed from Wings, such as footage of flamingos in the French Camargue marshes and of vultures and turtles in Costa Rica. In fact, Wings has a longer intro sequence and longer credits at the end, so there's probably 11-12 minutes more actual footage in Winged Planet.

One thing I liked in Wings that wasn't in the longer Winged Planet was just before the credits they showed a couple of minutes of how they filmed the birds, which is pretty cool.
