They undoubtedly haven't done The Wall yet because it's owned by Warner (along with Fame and Shoot the Moon).

Quite frankly, I don't feel that Criterion needs to do any Alan Parker films, but it'd be nice if the studios that own them did more. Out of his 14 feature films, only 4 have been released on Blu.

I'm actually surprised that Twilight Time hasn't tried to license Mississippi Burning from MGM or Come See the Paradise or The Commitments (especially the latter) from Fox. Or even Birdy from Sony.

For the record, though, Criterion has had a Parker film in their collection: they released Evita on laserdisc.

I am only counting the current numbering system here.

Original Bad Lieutenant > Nic Cage Bad Lieutenant
By a mile!

But I did preorder Wild At Heart. The only Lynch movie I haven't seen.

Would love to see Leaving Las Vegas on CC!

That's weird. I thought Peggy Sue was very good, I saw it last year for the first time. I think blows away Back to the Future while having a quite similar premise, it's a very well-done little movie. Instead of a big effects climax it has a real emotional core to it.

Valley Girl isn't particularly terrible. I think it is a bit more sober than many people give it credit for and most of the characters are pretty three-dimensional. It's pretty fluffy, of course, but I think it has some substance and was made by people who both cared about the movie they were making and weren't idiots, two things that are extremely rare when it came to 80s teen movies. I consider it about on a par with the john hughes movies like Pretty in Pink and Some Kind of Wonderful and The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller. It's certainly no "Say Anything" but I think it's quite good.

I'm not sure that I think it "blows away Back to the Future", though it certainly is a, let's say, less frivolous approach to the subject matter. At any rate, I think it's one of Coppola's better films.

I also liked L'Eclisse more - the closing sequence of that film is just mesmerising. So glad I can finally upgrade my DVD

They're all free all of the time. Always have been actually.
So have the Cassavetes films, Hopscotch, and a couple of others.

To Peggy Sue, to each his own. I just didn't like it.
Valley Girl's major is problem is that it aged horribly, now making it a wonderful slice of early 80s cheese.

Count me as one that wants The Commitments to be released. Love that film.

Yesterday I watched The Bad Sleep Well on Hulu & then went to see Grand Budapest Hotel. Very satisfying day of film watching.

For those with Amazon Prime, I strongly suggest browsing the free movies on Amazon Instant Video, as they have several Criterion films such as Certified Copy, Everlasting Moments, Weekend, and more.

They also have quite a few Kino films, as well.

I think that they said that because they just added the last 7 Zatoichi films to Hulu. The other 18 films have been up for free since they launched their Hulu channel.

It'd be interesting to know if there's a significant difference of opinion between those who lived through that period (whether in LA or not) and those who didn't, when it comes to "Valley Girl."

Well, I wasn't. I was born in the late 90s. And I know people born in the 70s that feel the same way.

Amazon Prime also has a few outstanding classic-era film noirs available for free streaming.

Watch Detour (1945). That movie is a quintessential noir masterpiece, and Ann Savage is just amazing.

If you liked Laura check out Where the Sidewalk Ends, same screen pairing but a grittier film all around. The Third Man is fantastic as well but sadly the CC Blu-ray is OOP and fetches high prices. Currently in print from CC though is Ministry of Fear which I highly recommend. Since the release is lacking in supplements it seems to be cheaper than most CC releases. From CC I'd also highly recommend Rififi.

I'd also recommend:

The Maltese Falcon
City That Never Sleeps
The Big Combo
Panic in the Streets
Plunder Road
Shack Out On 101
Asphalt Jungle
The Enforcer (sort of Noirish)

Olive has a lot of good ones, you can get them for a decent price if you shop around and buy on sale.
