Just blind bought this, $20 at Walmart, worth every penny. Great film. I disagree about replay value personally, but definitely see where everyone is coming from. Reynolds looks like Bruce Campbell in the Evil Dead movies on the cover. Just wanted to point that out. Lol

Great film. INCREDIBLE acting that should have earned Ryan an award, he single handedly carried this ENTIRE movie, ALL ALONE. Even Tom Hanks in Castaway had a supporting cast at the beginning and end.
But not Ryan, only voices to react to. His acting skills were INCREDIBLE and so was his wide range of emotions. From fear, desperation, anger, frustration, helplessness, and rage, all within an hour and a half. The director is also to be commended for his work in working with Ryan and the story is compelling to watch due to the build-up and your hope of his rescue. The unknown is what forces you to suffer through this journey WITH the main character. However, this is not one that could easily be watched over again. Not because of it's intensity or limited space, but simply, because once you know what happens to our main character, and how it ends, the journey seems unbearable to watch again. The reason for sticking to it has been lost after the first viewing, and while the performance is INCREDIBLE, the film lacks ENTERTAINMENT to make repeat viewings worth it. It's like watching a boat sink, over and over again, unless you have some action, or an entertaining sub-plot going on WHILE it sinks, like Titanic, to make it worth repeat viewing. Nothing entertaining here to watch. This was like watching a student film doing an experiment, and giving it an A+ grade. But now that the project is over, it better serves as a memory, or a lesson well taught. Almost like sitting through a thought-provoking seminar, you enjoy it once and got alot out of it, but you wouldn't want to sit through it again, ......you got it the first time. And this is from someone who LOVES to rewatch my favorite films over and over again for the sheer sake of being entertained. |

Great review and i agree i think Reynolds was snubbed by the Oscars, he was incredible in this. The director Rodrigo Cortés did a great job with such limited space in the coffin and i look forward to his future films. |

Good movie. Reynolds is a very good actor and should spend more time in serious roles like this.
I don't know what pissed me off more, the fact that he couldn't get connected to anyone right away or that when he finally did, they didn't seem to care all that much. It was like, he was in a different world and everyone else was still living there own lives oblivious to his suffering... |

Hahahaaaa!!! OMG!! There would not be a dial tone when Jabir the terrorist/insurgent hung up on Paul Conroy!
Why do movies constantly make this mistake????????? Mobile phones don't run on a dial tone! If some kid watches this movie in ten years, he or she is going to be like, "What the hell is that tone? Did cell phones make a tone when one party hung up?" |

I just finished watching this (Netflix Rental). Not much replay value for me.
Not for the claustrophobic. 7.1 audio was used effectively, which surprised me, given the size of the set. Anyone thinking about working as a civilian contractor in Afghanistan or Pakistan should watch this. I worked in Europe during the cold war and Southeast Asia during the Vietnam war as a civilian contractor. Personal risk is always high in those environments. This film gives it to you up close and personal. |

It's such a strange movie to judge. On one hand it's a well acted movie... but on the other hand it seems impossible to have re-playability.
"Oh man, I feel like watching that scene when he's in the coffin... oh wait... that's the entire movie" It's both great and a one-time-only thing for me |

I've just watched this again. Of course the journey's not quite the same once you know where the film's taking you, but Reynolds' performance justifies multiple watches and the film still holds a surprising degree of tension.
I bought it recently on Blu-ray, the local release here in Australia, and was surprised to realise that the transfer reduces the screen ratio from the OAR of 2.39:1 to a screen-filling 1.77:1. That's something I would normally rail against, and it seems to happen a lot to releases outside North America (I understand the UK release is the same as the OZ one). But in this instance, I actually like the 1.77:1 ratio far more; I have seen it in the OAR, and for me the tighter framing increases the sense of confinement (and hence, desperation) quite considerably. I'm still against releases changing the framing, generally, but in this case I'm quite pleased with the outcome. (Uggh, does that make me a hypocrite? ![]() |

For example, I know Matthew Mcconaughey and Jared Leto killed it in Dallas Buyers Club. Two of the best performances ever. Way better performances than DiCaprio and Jonah Hill in Wolf of Wall Street. But that doesn't make me love Dallas Buyers Club any more. I still prefer movie over performance. But I see what you're saying. |
